Enzymolysis-treated wood-derived hierarchical porous carbon for fluorescence-functionalized phase change materials

Yaqiong Li et al.

Summary: The current obstacles hindering the development and industrial application of phase change materials (PCMs) include low thermal conductivity, high cost, leakage, and poor mechanical performance. This study aims to enhance the thermal conductivity and power capacity of PCMs by using abundant biomass-derived carbon as supports. Cellulase is used to hydrolyze cellulose in wood and create micropores, which leads to effective construction of adsorption sites during the subsequent pyrolysis process. The resulting hierarchical porous carbon infiltrates polyethylene glycol (PEG) and enhances crystallization. This strategy combines good mechanical performance, high energy storage capacity, anisotropic thermal conductivity, and improved thermal stability. Furthermore, the composite PCMs loaded with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) integrate fluorescent function and thermal energy storage, providing potential applications in specific equipment.
