Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) products and systems: A review of energy-related behavior

Nuria Martin-Chivelet et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the energy-related features of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) modules and systems, including thermal, solar, optical, and electrical aspects. Further standardization is needed to evaluate the heat transfer and solar heat gain of BIPV modules. The optical properties of BIPV modules play a role in balancing energy saving, electricity generation, aesthetics, and visual comfort. Architecturally adapted BIPV design may reduce the efficiency of modules and systems compared to standard photovoltaic ones. Special operating conditions of BIPV systems complicate electrical design and performance forecasting.

Building PV integration according to regional climate conditions: BIPV regional adaptability extending Ko spacing diaeresis ppen-Geiger climate classification against urban and climate-related temperature increases

Nikolaos Skandalos et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel BIPV climatic design framework for PV buildings positioning and adaptation to local climate, aiming to minimize energy expenditure and use of resources. By reviewing and analyzing a large number of BIPV studies globally, the global horizontal irradiation (GHI) value is selected as an additional index, and the sequence of PV building component integration is proposed according to the local climate. The energy performance of buildings is maximized through their positive energy contributions and sharing.

Prospects of photovoltaic rooftops, walls and windows at a city to building scale

Maria Panagiotidou et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the solar energy harvesting potential of PVs integrated into building rooftops, walls, and windows at various spatial resolutions in Melbourne, Australia, and investigated the relationship between PV electricity production and urban morphology, seasonal variation, and local electricity consumption. The results showed that PV rooftops have the largest share of solar energy potential in the city, with windows becoming more prominent in areas with high densities of high-rise and glazed buildings. The technical workflow presented in this study can help cities make decisions on PV implementation in urban environments.
