Manure matters: prospects for regional banana-livestock integration for sustainable intensification in South-West Uganda

Harmen den Braber et al.

Summary: The study found that there is a high demand for potassium in banana cultivation, which cannot be met by the current supply of manure alone. Therefore, for sustainable intensification, supplementing manure with potassium-based fertilizers is a better option.

Nutrient balances in smallholder farms in northern Ethiopia

Shimbahri Mesfin et al.

Summary: This study examined nutrient management on contrasting farms in two agro-ecological regions in northern Ethiopia and found differences in nutrient balances between rich and poor farmers. With increased fertilizer use, nitrogen losses to the environment also increased. Overall, soil stocks of nitrogen and potassium are declining, highlighting the need for effective nutrient management practices and improved access to fertilizers for poorer farmers.
