Probing the nature of soil organic matter

Zhe (Han) Weng et al.

Summary: Soil organic carbon management is a nature-based method for carbon dioxide removal, which also enhances soil health and agricultural productivity. Recent theories emphasize the importance of molecular diversity, spatial heterogeneity, and temporal variability of organic compounds in controlling the formation and persistence of soil organic matter (SOM). Advanced in situ techniques are needed to study these processes without disturbing the physical and chemical integrity of the sample.

Disturbance and management effects on forest soil organic carbon stocks in the Pacific Northwest

Lucas E. Nave et al.

Summary: This article uses meta-analysis and observational databases to assess the impact of disturbance and management on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. The results indicate that vegetation, climate, and topography are the main controlling factors of SOC stocks. Increased warming, drying, wildfires, and forest regeneration failure pose significant risks to SOC stocks in the Pacific Northwest region. Wildfires decrease SOC stocks throughout the soil profile, while other management practices have minimal impact on SOC stocks.

Reviews and syntheses: The promise of big diverse soil data, moving current practices towards future potential

Katherine E. O. Todd-Brown et al.

Summary: In this article, current practices in soil data synthesis across all stages of database creation are summarized, and suggestions for using soil-focused semantic tools to improve existing data pipelines are provided. The goal is to provide an overview of soil data practices for the soil data community and identify the direction to fully leverage big data to solve soil problems in the next century.

The Human Impact on All Soil-Forming Factors during the Anthropocene

Ishai Dror et al.

Summary: Soil, the thin outer skin of the Earth's land, is a critical and fragile natural resource that serves as the basis for global agriculture and terrestrial biological activity. Human activity has become the leading component influencing each of the original soil-forming factors. It is important to consider the significance of soil and the direct and indirect effects of human activity on soil-forming factors together to ensure sustainability of this essential resource.
