Changes in plant inputs alter soil carbon and microbial communities in forest ecosystems

Jiguang Feng et al.

Summary: Global changes can alter plant inputs and affect soil carbon and microbial communities in forests. A meta-analysis of 166 experiments worldwide revealed that alterations in aboveground litter and/or root inputs had profound effects on soil carbon and microbial communities. Litter addition stimulated soil organic carbon (SOC) pools and microbial biomass, whereas removal of litter, roots or both (no inputs) decreased them. The responses to litter alterations positively correlated with litter input rate and total litter input.

Soil carbon stocks in temperate grasslands differ strongly across sites but are insensitive to decade-long fertilization

Adrienne B. Keller et al.

Summary: Nutrient addition experiments have shown that changes in soil carbon and nitrogen pools are influenced by nutrient amendments, with varying effects. Differences in soil carbon and nitrogen pool sizes among sites varied greatly, with moisture index, plant productivity, soil texture, and mineralogy as key predictors of cross-site soil carbon. Protecting highly productive temperate grasslands is crucial for reducing future greenhouse gas emissions from land use change.

Nitrogen fertilization weakens the linkage between soil carbon and microbial diversity: A global meta-analysis

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Soil microbes play a critical role in belowground carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Nitrogen fertilization has been found to decrease soil microbial diversity while increasing soil organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon. However, this increase in carbon is not accompanied by an increase in microbial diversity, suggesting a weakened linkage between soil carbon and microbial diversity under nitrogen fertilization.

Broader environmental adaptation of rare rather than abundant bacteria in reforestation succession soil

Zhibin He et al.

Summary: Revealing the responses of rare and abundant bacteria to environmental change is crucial for understanding microbial community assembly and ecosystem function. This study investigated the assembly processes and environmental adaptations of rare and abundant bacteria in different reforestation successions. The results showed that rare bacteria had wider environmental adaptability and stronger clustering, while abundant bacteria were more influenced by stochastic processes. The study highlights the key role of rare and abundant bacteria in reforestation ecological succession soils.

Phosphorus additions imbalance terrestrial ecosystem C:N:P stoichiometry

Yuan Sun et al.

Summary: Phosphorus addition significantly decreases N:P and C:P ratios in plant, soil, and microbial biomass, but has negligible effects on C:N ratios. The effects of phosphorus addition become more evident with higher application rates and longer experimental duration, and do not vary with ecosystem types or climates. Changes in N:P and C:P ratios in soil and microbial biomass are associated with changes in soil pH and fungi:bacteria ratios.

Effects of Nitrogen Deposition on Nitrogen-Mineralizing Enzyme Activity and Soil Microbial Community Structure in a Korean Pine Plantation

Wenyuan He et al.

Summary: The study showed that nitrogen addition at different concentrations did not significantly affect soil pH, while high nitrogen addition significantly increased soil organic matter, ammonium nitrogen, and nitrate nitrogen content. Different nitrogen concentrations affected soil fungal community structure, with moderate nitrogen addition decreasing urease and protease activity. Nitrogen addition also resulted in changes in microbial community composition, with certain bacterial and fungal species changing significantly under different nitrogen treatments.

Nutrient availability is a dominant predictor of soil bacterial and fungal community composition after nitrogen addition in subtropical acidic forests

Juyan Cui et al.

Summary: Nutrient addition, especially nitrogen, has significant impacts on belowground microbial diversity and community structure in subtropical forests. Bacterial alpha-diversity decreased significantly in subsoil with high nitrogen addition. Soil dissolved organic carbon decreased significantly after high nitrogen addition, while available nitrogen declined significantly after low nitrogen addition. Soil dissolved organic carbon was found to be the dominant factor influencing soil bacterial community composition, while available nitrogen and microbial biomass nitrogen were the best predictors of soil fungal community structure dynamics. These results provide evidence of shifts in soil microbial community structure in response to increasing nitrogen deposition in acidic subtropical forests.

Soil microbial community and network changes after long-term use of plastic mulch and nitrogen fertilization on semiarid farmland

Jianliang Liu et al.

Summary: Soil microbes play a crucial role in soil quality and productivity. Plastic film mulch (FM) combined with fertilization has greatly increased crop yields, but the effects on soil microbial communities, especially co-occurrence patterns, are unclear. This study found that nitrogen fertilization primarily affected bacterial community structure, while FM regulated fungal community structure. Network analysis revealed that FM led to an unstable co-occurrence network, while nitrogen fertilization increased both positive and negative links among microbes, indicating enhanced cooperation and competition.
