Progressive fusion learning: A multimodal joint segmentation framework for building extraction from optical and SAR images

Xue Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a progressive fusion learning framework that explicitly extracts shared features of multimodal images as the information medium and achieves information fusion through multistage learning. Based on this framework, a network called the multistage multimodal fusion network (MMFNet) is designed, which uses phase as a modal invariant to achieve high-precision building extraction from joint optical and SAR images. Experimental results show that MMFNet has a significant extraction effect and yields improved extraction of edge details of buildings compared to other multimodal joint segmentation methods, with an improvement ranging from 0.2% to 9.5%.

Deep learning: a statistical viewpoint

Peter L. Bartlett et al.

Summary: The successful practical application of deep learning has raised theoretical surprises, suggesting that overparameterization allows for interpolating solutions, implicit regularization, and benign overfitting. By examining simple settings, the principles underlying these phenomena are illustrated, particularly in regression problems with quadratic loss, providing insights into the behavior of deep learning methods.
