A three-dimensional constitutive model for shape memory alloy considering transformation-induced plasticity, two-way shape memory effect, plastic yield and tension-compression asymmetry

Zhixiang Rao et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a three-dimensional phenomenological constitutive model for shape memory alloys (SMA) that considers various thermomechanical mechanisms, including transformation-induced plasticity, two-way shape memory effect, plastic yield, and tension-compression asymmetry. It introduces a new method to address the variation of transformation strain with stress levels and a transformation hardening function for accurate prediction of the transformation process. The proposed model is validated through experiments and simulations, demonstrating its effectiveness in capturing the thermomechanical response of SMA structures.

Experimental study and life prediction on fatigue failure of NiTi shape memory alloy under multi-axial one-way shape memory cyclic loadings

Tianxing Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper conducted thermo-mechanical coupling fatigue experiments on NiTi shape memory alloy microtubes with one-way shape memory effect under uniaxial and multiaxial stress control. It was found that loading paths and stress levels affected cyclic degradation and fatigue lives, with multiaxial loading accelerating reorientation-induced ratcheting. The establishment of a failure criterion and prediction model showed good agreement between predicted and experimental fatigue lives.

Finite element simulation and experimental investigation on the effect of temperature on pseudoelastic behavior of perforated Ni-Ti shape memory alloy strips

Summary: This study investigates the temperature-dependent pseudoelastic behavior of shape memory alloy (SMA) sheets through experimental and finite element (FE) modeling. The mechanical properties of Ni-Ti alloy materials at different temperatures are obtained experimentally, and the structure of these materials is examined using SEM images and XRD test. The FE model is used to study the pseudoelastic behavior and the effect of temperature on residual deflection of SMA strips with a circular hole. The effects of various parameters on residual deformation and residual strains are also investigated.

A Shape Memory Alloy Constitutive Model with Polynomial Phase Transformation Kinetics

Arthur Adeodato et al.

Summary: Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have complex thermomechanical behavior due to various nonlinear phenomena. This study proposes a novel constitutive model with polynomial phase transformation kinetics, which can explicitly evaluate stress-driven or strain-driven cases without iterative algorithms. The model is validated through experimental tests and numerical simulations, showing its capability to accurately describe the thermomechanical behavior of SMAs.

hermo-mechanically coupled deformation of pseudoelastic NiTi SMA helical spring

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the thermo-mechanically coupled deformation and temperature evolution of pseudoelastic NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) helical spring were investigated through cyclic tension-unloading tests. The experimental results revealed the phase transition process between austenite (A) and martensite (M) phases, including an intermediate rhombohedral (R) phase. The force-displacement responses of the spring were found to be strongly influenced by the loading rate, which can be explained by the Clausius-Clapeyron relation and the competition between heat generation and heat exchange. A three-dimensional phenomenological constitutive model and an analytical model were developed to accurately describe the behavior of the spring. The models were validated by comparing the simulation results with experimental data, and the effects of geometric parameters and ambient temperature on the thermo-mechanical responses of the spring were predicted and discussed.

Machine learning-driven performance-based seismic design of hybrid self-centering braced frames with SMA braces and viscous dampers

Shuling Hu et al.

Summary: A hybrid self-centering braced frame equipped with shape memory alloy-based self-centering braces and viscous dampers is proposed in this paper to achieve enhanced seismic performance. The design parameters of the self-centering braces and viscous dampers are investigated through parametric dynamic analyses, and a prediction model and performance-based design method are developed. The results show that the hybrid self-centering braced frames can achieve the desired performance objective and have smaller base shear demand and floor acceleration responses compared to the frames with self-centering braces only.

Summary: This study introduces a three-dimensional constitutive model for shape memory alloys that considers both Transformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) and Two-Way Shape Memory Effect (TWSME), capable of capturing the large strains and rotations exhibited by SMAs under complex thermomechanical cycling. The model accurately captures stress-dependent TRIP generation and TWSME effects through internal state variables.

Molecular dynamics simulations on one-way shape memory effect of nanocrystalline NiTi shape memory alloy and its cyclic degeneration

Bing Wang et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the investigation of the one-way shape memory effect and cyclic degeneration in nanocrystalline NiTi shape memory alloy under thermo-mechanically coupled cyclic loading conditions. It is found that martensite reorientation occurs through the migration of interfaces between martensite variants, growth of martensite variants with preferred orientations, and their assimilation to variants with unfavorable orientations. The cyclic degeneration of the one-way shape memory effect is attributed to interactions among martensite reorientation, martensite transformation, martensite reorientation-induced plasticity, and martensite transformation-induced plasticity.

The evolution of dynamic recrystallization and recrystallization texture during isothermal compression of NiTi shape memory alloy

Jiao Luo et al.

Summary: Isothermal compression tests, EBSD observations, and quantitative analysis were conducted to investigate the effect of process parameters on microstructure variables during isothermal compression of NiTi shape memory alloy. The results showed that dynamic recovery is the dominant softening mechanism at lower strains, while dynamic recrystallization plays a significant role in softening the alloy at higher strains, leading to a steady state of flow behavior. Additionally, the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization during deformation promotes the formation of a strong gamma-fiber texture in the alloy.

Summary: The study demonstrates that periodic "healing" treatment during fatigue testing of shape memory alloys can effectively extend the fatigue life of the alloy, with 20% of the life elapsed being the optimal treatment time point. Different timing of healing treatment affects the effectiveness of improving fatigue life, indicating irreversible damage has already occurred.
