Fullerenol@nano-montmorillonite nanocomposite as an efficient radioprotective agent for ameliorating radioactive duodenal injury

Chengya Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of fullerenol@nano-montmorillonite nanocomposite in protecting against duodenal damage caused by X-ray radiation. By utilizing the free radical scavenging ability of fullerenol and the intestinal adhesion ability of nano-montmorillonite, FNMT nanocomposite significantly reduces radiation-induced adverse effects in mice.

Micro/nano-plastics cause neurobehavioral toxicity in discus fish (Symphysodon aequifasciatus): Insight from brain-gut-microbiota axis

Jun-Nan Huang et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have investigated the neurobehavioral toxicity of microplastics, and this study reveals a novel mechanism by which microplastics may cause behavioral toxicities via the brain-gut-microbiota axis. Results showed that exposure to different types and concentrations of microplastics had varying effects on the growth, swimming, and predatory performance of juvenile discus fish, as well as on neurotransmitter concentrations in the brain and gut. Additionally, the study found changes in gut microbiota richness and composition, as well as alterations in gene expression related to neural activities and enrichment of specific neuroactive pathways in both types of microplastics.

Orally administered Bi2S3@SiO2 core-shell nanomaterials as gastrointestinal contrast agents and their influence on gut microbiota

Rui Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of silica-coated bismuth sulfide core-shell nanomaterials were synthesized and compared with traditional barium sulfate contrast agents. The results showed that these nanomaterials exhibited superior contrast performance and elimination efficacy in gastrointestinal CT imaging, with minimal impact on the gut microbiota in mice.

A systematic review on the effects of nanomaterials on gut microbiota

W. Utembe et al.

Summary: This systematic review assesses the effects of nanomaterials (NMs) on gut microbiota (GM) through in vivo and in vitro studies. The findings suggest that several types of NMs can cause GM dysbiosis, with Zn and Cu-based NMs, Cu-loaded chitosan NPs, Ag NMs, and anatase TiO2 NPs having the most significant effects. Further research is needed to understand the variations in NM effects based on organism type and sex, NM size, shape, and surface properties, as well as the effects of exposure to mixtures of NMs.

Long-term exposure to titanium dioxide nanoparticles promotes diet-induced obesity through exacerbating intestinal mucus layer damage and microbiota dysbiosis

Xiaoqiang Zhu et al.

Summary: It was found that titanium dioxide nanoparticles exacerbated obesity induced by high fat diet by disrupting the mucus layer and altering gut microbiota. The nanoparticles induced colonic mucus layer disruption and obesity-related microbiota dysbiosis, leading to low-grade systemic inflammation and worsening of obesity. Gut microbiota depletion eliminated these effects, highlighting their necessity in the inflammation and obesity induced by titanium dioxide nanoparticles.
