Chemically derived graphene quantum dots for high-strain sensing

Shujun Wang et al.

Summary: Chemically derived graphene quantum dots have shown great potential for making highly stretchable and cost-effective strain sensors. By dropcasting solution-processed GQDs between interdigitated electrodes on polydimethylsiloxane, devices that can function in a wide range of strain values (0.06% to over 50%) were obtained.

Tunable Plasmonic Microcapsules with Embedded Noble Metal Nanoparticles for Optical Microsensing

Celine Burel et al.

Summary: We investigated the synthesis conditions for tunable plasmonic microcapsules (MCs) consisting of a hydrophobic liquid core encapsulated in a silica shell with embedded metallic nanoparticles (NPs). The mechanical robustness of the MCs was found to be dependent on the thickness of the silica shell. Different oils were used for the synthesis of MCs, and the relative solubility of the silica precursor and the polarity of the oil phase were found to influence the final MC characteristics. By varying the ratio of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) NPs, the optical response of the MCs could be finely tuned. The versatile emulsion template method used in this study shows promise for designing multifunctional MCs with modular nanoscale building blocks.

Effects of Repetitive Pressure on the Photoluminescence of Bare and ZnS-Capped CuInS2 Quantum Dots: Implications for Nanoscale Stress Sensors

Jundiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pressure-dependent photoluminescence (PL) responses of CuInS2 quantum dots (QDs) and CuInS2/ZnS core-shell QDs under repetitive pressure loadings. The CuInS2/ZnS QDs exhibit higher PL intensity and a repeatable relationship between PL emission peak energy (E-PL) and external pressure (P), which makes them desirable for stress/strain sensing applications.

Force sensors for measuring microenvironmental forces during mesenchymal condensation

Robert A. Gutierrez et al.

Summary: This study presents a versatile approach to measure cellular forces during mesenchymal condensation using hyper-compliant microparticles, revealing a wide range of tensile and compressive forces exerted by cells during tissue formation. Results show a period of relative equilibrium following an initial phase of diverse forces. Applying collagen coating enhances the forces exerted by cells, and the sensitivity of the force sensors allows for the detection of small changes in the microenvironment even at the earliest stages of development and morphogenesis.

Mechanochemistry unveils stress transfer during sacrificial bond fracture of tough multiple network elastomers

Yinjun Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the molecular details of stress transfer from a stiff percolating filler to a stretchable matrix in soft materials. By using model multiple network elastomers containing spiropyran force sensors, the research reveals the critical stress level where cooperative bond scission occurs and the load is shared between filler and matrix chains. The study provides insights into the different roles played by multiple networks in the onset of fracture and offers molecular perspectives for the construction of fracture models in elastomers.

Fast reversible isomerization of merocyanine as a tool to quantify stress history in elastomers

Yinjun Chen et al.

Summary: A mechanochemistry based approach using Spiropyran (SP) as a force sensitive molecular probe in multiple network elastomers (MNE) is proposed to detect and map stress history during dynamic processes. The color changes from Spiropyran to Merocyanine and subsequent reversible isomerization of Merocyanine provide insights into the stress experienced by the material. The color changes can be used to accurately map stress history during loading and unloading processes, showing excellent agreement with finite element simulations on fractured samples.
