Salt-Assisted MoS2 Growth: Molecular Mechanisms from the First Principles

Jincheng Lei et al.

Summary: Recently, it has been found that halide salts can promote the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). In this study, the molecular mechanisms during the salt-assisted CVD growth of MoS2 monolayers were investigated using first-principles calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The sulfurization of molybdenum oxyhalides was explored and found to have much lower activation barriers than molybdenum oxide, which is present during conventional saltless growth. The rate-limiting barriers were found to depend linearly on the electronegativity of the halogen element, with oxyiodide having the lowest barrier. This study reveals the promoting mechanisms of halides and allows growth parameter optimization for faster growth of MoS2 monolayers in CVD synthesis.

Ammonium Salts: New Synergistic Additive for Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth of MoS2

Guanmeng Li et al.

Summary: Synergistic additives, ammonium salts, have been used in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of MoS2 to achieve controlled domain layering and shape, as well as centimeter-scale films. This method enables direct fabrication of MoS2 electronic devices on clean substrates without the need for transfer steps, and it also promotes improved hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. The use of ammonium salts in CVD paves the way for practical applications of MoS2 in modern electronics and catalysis.

NaCl-assisted substrate dependent 2D planar nucleated growth of MoS2

Aditya Singh et al.

Summary: A facile NaCl-assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method was used to synthesize high-quality MoS2 on different substrates, with sapphire and SiO2/Si suitable for large flakes growth and mica suitable for continuous films. 1L-MoS2 on sapphire exhibited high crystalline quality, while on other substrates like quartz and bare Si, the quality was poorer. The study highlights the role of NaCl in promoting the formation of seeding promoter and facilitating layer transfer for large-scale synthesis of high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Direct growth of monolayer 1T-2H MoS2 heterostructures using KCl-assisted CVD process

Victor M. Arellano Arreola et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the direct synthesis of 1T phase domains coexisting with 2H phase structure in micrometer-sized MoS2 monolayer flakes using assisted atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) growth. It was shown that KCl can promote the formation of a stable 1T-MoS2 phase, providing a simple and reproducible route towards polymorphism phase engineering of layered TMDs.

Valence oscillation and dynamic active sites in monolayer NiCo hydroxides for water oxidation

Jianxin Kang et al.

Summary: Monolayer materials offer an extra degree of freedom to modulate electronic structures and catalytic performances, promoting dynamic active site generation for the oxygen evolution reaction at lower potentials. Lattice doping with cobalt tunes the electronic structure and reduces overpotential, while in situ experiments reveal valence state oscillation in NiCo hydroxides as a fundamental mechanism for active site generation.

NaCl-Assisted CVD Growth of Large-Area High-Quality Trilayer MoS2 and the Role of the Concentration Boundary Layer

Aditya Singh et al.

Summary: This study explores the role of the concentration boundary layer in achieving large-area MoS2 in NaCl-assisted CVD growth at low temperature. Controlling the boundary layer thickness led to the synthesis of monolayer, bilayer, trilayer, and bulk MoS2 films and flakes in single-zone CVD at atmospheric pressure. The approach presented may lead to the synthesis of other wafer-scale 2DLMs, paving the way for nano- and optoelectronics.
