Phonon-Limited Valley Polarization in Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides

Zuzhang Lin et al.

Summary: This study explores the fundamental limits of valley polarization through phonon-mediated optical absorption and reveals that the valley polarization is around 70% at room temperature for state-of-the-art valleytronic materials. This finding suggests that sufficiently pure transition-metal dichalcogenides are ideal candidates for valleytronics applications.

Coherent modulation of chiral nonlinear optics with crystal symmetry

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: Light modulation is crucial for photonics and optoelectronics. In this study, we demonstrate all-optical coherent modulation of third-harmonic generation using chiral light with polarization selectivity enabled by symmetry. Experimental results show modulation depth approaching 100% and ultra-fast modulation speed in monolayer materials (MoS2).

Probing valley population imbalance in transition metal dichalcogenides via temperature-dependent second harmonic generation imaging

Leonidas Mouchliadis et al.

Summary: Degenerate minima in momentum space provide an additional degree of freedom for information transport and storage, particularly in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The temperature-induced change of the second harmonic generated (SHG) intensity dependence on the excitation field polarization is a fingerprint of the valley population imbalance (VPI) in TMDs. By using polarization-resolved raster-scanning imaging microscopy, pixel-by-pixel VPI mapping was performed inside a cryostat, revealing the rotation of SHG intensity polar diagrams at low temperatures attributed to the VPI-induced SHG.
