Constructing stable surface structures enabling fast charging for Li-rich layered oxide cathodes

Shihao Li et al.

Summary: An integrative and facile surface structures constructing strategy was provided to achieve stable cycling and fast charging in Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides (LLOs). The material with induced stable bi-phase coating layers delivers a high discharge specific capacity and excellent rate performance. The excellent fast charging performance and cycling stability were attributed to accelerated Li+ transportation rate and suppressed oxygen release, transition metals dissolution, and electrolyte attack.

Ni/Li antisite induced disordered passivation layer for high-Ni layered oxide cathode material

Sidra Jamil et al.

Summary: A disordered passivation layer induced by Li/Ni antisite is introduced on LiNi0.94Co0.03Mn0.03O2 through dual doping of Ta and Al. This ultrathin disordered layer improves electrochemical performance by enhancing conductivities, stabilizing lattice oxygen, and alleviating transition metal dissolution and irreversible phase transition. The synergistic effect of Ta and Al co-doping with antisite-induced disordered structure is a promising approach for the commercialization of high-Ni layered oxide cathodes.

In Situ Construction of Uniform and Robust Cathode-Electrolyte Interphase for Li-Rich Layered Oxides

Jingteng Zhao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an in situ anchoring + pouring synergistic cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) construction using HTCN and TMSP electrolyte additives to alleviate the challenges faced by high-energy-density Li-rich layered oxides in conventional electrolytes. The uniform and robust in situ constructed CEI layer suppresses transition metal dissolution, shields the cathode against diverse side reactions, and significantly improves electrochemical performance with minimal discharge voltage decay. Insights into enhancing the performance of high-energy and high-voltage cathode materials through effective, convenient, and economical electrolyte approaches are provided.

Structure and Charge Regulation Strategy Enabling Superior Cyclability for Ni-Rich Layered Cathode Materials

Wei Huang et al.

Summary: Ni-rich layered oxides show promise as cathode materials for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries, but their widespread application is hindered by capacity fading and safety concerns. Introducing high-valence Ta5+ ions in Ni-rich cathodes improves electrochemical performance and thermal stability, leading to enhanced cyclic stability and prevention of surface Ni reduction. This study emphasizes the importance of an integrated optimization strategy for Ni-rich cathodes and provides insights into the mechanisms of high-valence ion substitution in layered cathodes.
