Optical sensing of organic vapor using blue phase liquid crystals

Berfin Gurboga et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of blue phase liquid crystals for sensing toxic gas vapours. The diffusion and adsorption of toluene, phenol, and 1,2 dichloropropane vapours on the liquid crystals are studied, and the optical response is determined as a function of temperature and time. The diffusion coefficient of toluene vapour in the liquid crystals is calculated.

Preparation and properties of water-responsive films with color controllable based on liquid crystal and poly(ethylene glycol) interpenetrating polymer network

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study designed and prepared a water-responsive film based on cholesteric liquid crystal and polyethylene glycol interpenetrating polymer network. The film can reversibly change color when the humidity of the surrounding environment changes, avoiding damage to the film structure and allowing control of film performance by changing different factors.

Interpenetrating network based polymeric sensors with enhanced specificity, sensitivity, and reusability

O. Batir et al.

Summary: In this study, an interpenetrating polymeric network (IPN) based on the poly(RM257) structure of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was developed to improve the durability, reusability, and performance of polymeric sensors against volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The collaborative responsiveness of the IPN constituents enhanced the specificity and sensitivity of the sensors. Real-time experiments showed significant improvements in measurement accuracy, response, and recovery time compared to non-IPN counterparts.

Dual stimuli-responsive porous ionic liquids with reversible phase transition behavior based on ionic liquid crystals for CO2 and C2H4 adsorption

Xiaoqian Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a generalizable strategy to construct stimuli-responsive porous ionic liquids by self-assembling responsive ionic liquid crystals and metal-organic frameworks. The resulting porous ionic liquids exhibit rapid reversible transition behaviors and increased adsorption capacity for CO2 and C2H4. The stimuli-responsiveness of the porous ionic liquids can be demonstrated through changes in their phase, porosity, gas adsorption, and separation.
