Precise Pentamers with Diverse Monomer Sequences and Their Thermal Properties

Rui-Zhe Liu et al.

Summary: Sequenced-defined oligomers have attracted significant attention in the field of polymer chemistry due to their ability to precisely control both chain length and monomer sequence. Despite recent development in synthetic methodologies, the investigation of how minor changes in monomer sequence affect the physical properties of these materials is still lacking. In this study, four sequenced pentamers were synthesized using a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) technique. The introduction of an acyclic monomer at different positions in a base pentamer led to a significant decrease in the glass transition temperature (Tg). Furthermore, pentamers with identical primary structures but different monomer sequences exhibited different Tg values depending on the position of the acyclic monomer unit. The middle position caused a profound decrease in Tg, attributed to increased molecular flexibility. These synthetic pentamers proved to be excellent oligomeric plasticizers for modulating the thermal transitions of bulk polymer materials.

Challenges and limits of mechanical stability in 3D direct laser writing

Elaheh Sedghamiz et al.

Summary: Direct laser writing is an effective technique for fabricating complex 3D polymer networks using ultrashort laser pulses, but obtaining a time-resolved microscopic picture of the printing process in operando remains a challenge. In this study, a molecular dynamics simulation approach is used to model direct laser writing and investigate the effect of writing condition and aspect ratio on the mechanical properties of the printed polymer network.

Stress-strain response of polymers made through two-photon lithography: Micro-scale experiments and neural network modeling

Marianna Diamantopoulou et al.

Summary: Photopolymerization is the main chemical mechanism in two-photon lithography, allowing the fabrication of nano- and micro-sized structures using negative-tone photoresist materials. The study reveals a relationship between process parameters, degree of polymerization, and stress-strain response of polymer structures. Higher degrees of conversion result in higher elastic moduli and strength in the fabricated structures, with IP-Dip resin showing higher conversion than IP-S resin at the same laser power. Neural network models are developed for each resin to predict stress-strain responses based on the degree of conversion, providing basic formulas for engineering practice.

Using nickel to fold discrete synthetic macromolecules into single-chain nanoparticles

Melissa A. Reith et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the design and characterization of single-chain nanoparticles formed by the folding of sequence-defined macromolecules with metal ions, showing the influence of the ligand positioning on the compaction process and final size. Molecular dynamics simulations highlight the effects of sequence and metal complexation on the structure and compaction of the nanoparticles, with varying shapes observed when altering the number of spacer units. Expanding the system to larger structures results in drastically decreased hydrodynamic radii after compaction.

Effect of backbone and end-group regioisomerism on thermomechanical properties of vanillin-based polyurethane networks

Adithya Rangamani et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of regioisomerism and composition in polymeric networks using a scalable SD-PUM platform. The results showed that the thermomechanical properties of the networks were sensitive to the regioisomer embedded in the SD-PUM backbone and the type of macromer end-group. This work demonstrates the robustness of the SD-PUM platform in modulating material properties through backbone and end-group regioisomers.
