The prognostic significance of postoperative hyperbilirubinemia in cardiac surgery: systematic review and meta-analysis

Dev Raveendran et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the association between post-operative hyperbilirubinemia (PH) and mortality and morbidity in cardiac surgery patients. The results showed that PH can predict in-hospital mortality and is associated with increased intensive care unit and hospital length of stay. Qualitative analysis also suggested that PH is related to increased post-operative ventilation requirements and reduced long-term survival rates.

Crosstalk of Autophagy and Apoptosis

Maurizio Sorice

Summary: Autophagy and apoptosis are two fundamental mechanisms regulating cell fate, and they are significantly interconnected through various crosstalk mechanisms. The crosstalk between autophagy and apoptosis impacts various pathologies, including rheumatic diseases. This Special Issue focuses on investigating the bioactive properties of antitumor drugs, particularly the role of anthraquinone derivatives in regulating cell death and autophagy crosstalk.

Impact of hyperbilirubinemia associated acute kidney injury on chronic kidney disease after aortic arch surgery: a retrospective study with follow-up of 1-year

Lin Lyu et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of HB associated AKI on CKD after aortic arch surgery. The results showed that patients suffering HB associated AKI were at higher odds of developing CKD than patients suffering AKI without HB.

Hyperbilirubinemia after surgical repair for acute type a aortic dissection: A propensity score-matched analysis

Zhigang Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of postoperative hyperbilirubinemia (PH) after acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) surgical repair. The results showed a high incidence of PH, which was associated with worse short- and long-term prognosis. Age, preoperative total bilirubin level, pericardial tamponade, CPB duration, and postoperative CVP level were identified as risk factors for the development of PH.

Chronic progression of cardiac surgery associated acute kidney injury: Intermediary role of acute kidney disease

Jin Sun Cho et al.

Summary: The study revealed that postoperative AKI in valvular heart surgery patients increases the risk of AKD and CKD development, with persistent AKI further escalating this risk. Additionally, heart failure and high right ventricular pressure postoperatively were identified as independent risk factors for CKD.

Plasma Metabolites-Based Prediction in Cardiac Surgery-Associated Acute Kidney Injury

Hao Cui et al.

Summary: Metabolomics-based biomarkers in plasma samples within 24 hours post cardiac surgery can distinguish patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) from controls. Specific metabolites such as gluconic acid, fumaric acid, and pseudouridine were upregulated in AKI patients. A predictive model utilizing machine learning algorithms and clinical parameters showed excellent discriminative ability for identifying CSA-AKI.

Mitophagy protein PINK1 suppresses colon tumor growth by metabolic reprogramming via p53 activation and reducing acetyl-CoA production

Kunlun Yin et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the mitochondria protein PINK1 suppresses colon tumor growth by metabolic reprogramming and reducing acetyl-CoA production. PINK1 overexpression promotes mitophagy, decreases glycolysis, and increases mitochondrial respiration, while PINK1 deletion leads to decreased apoptosis, increased glycolysis, and reduced mitochondrial respiration.

Mitochondrial ROS promote mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation in ischemic acute kidney injury by disrupting TFAM-mediated mtDNA maintenance

Meng Zhao et al.

Summary: Reducing mtROS levels attenuated renal dysfunction, mitochondrial damage, and inflammation in IRI-AKI mice. The loss of TFAM can impact mtDNA maintenance, mitochondrial energy metabolism, and cytokine release. Insights into the role of mtROS and TFAM in IRI-AKI provide potential therapeutic targets for renal repair.
