Massimo Zilio et al.

Summary: This study found that using stabilized digestate obtained from anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge as fertilizer is as effective as synthetic fertilizers in agricultural fields, without significant differences in soil chemical characteristics or pollutant accumulation. It also does not increase ammonia or greenhouse gas emissions.

Dimensionally controlled graphene-based surfaces for photothermal membrane crystallization

Sergio Santoro et al.

Summary: Membrane-based photothermal crystallization is a pioneering technology that uses graphene thin films to extract valuable minerals from seawater and brines. This study explores the use of two-dimensional and three-dimensional vertically oriented graphene membranes for dehydrating and crystallizing sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and magnesium sulfate hypersaline solutions. The results show that the three-dimensional graphene membrane has superior light-to-heat conversion efficiency, leading to a 3-fold increase in the evaporation rate.

An integrated membrane distillation, photocatalysis and polyelectrolyte-enhanced ultrafiltration process for arsenic remediation at point-of-use

Sergio Santoro et al.

Summary: An integrated process based on MD, photocatalysis, and PEUF was developed for effective remediation of arsenic contamination in drinking water. The method demonstrated high water recovery and rational management of residual contaminants through experimental tests. Speciation analysis showed the importance of regulating feed pH and softening before different treatment stages for efficient removal of arsenic.

Magdalena Tyszer et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that geothermal wastewater desalination system can produce satisfactory fresh water and high-quality concentrate, suitable for various purposes such as balneotherapy treatment, drinking and therapeutic purposes. However, additional treatment may be needed for concentrates with high boron concentration and elevated chromium content, limiting their potential use for some therapeutic or cosmetic products.

Thermal Performance of Integrated Direct Contact and Vacuum Membrane Distillation Units

Alessandra Criscuoli

Summary: An integrated membrane distillation (MD) flowsheet combining direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) and vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) units was proposed and analyzed for the first time, showing improved thermal performance and water recovery factor. The integration of DCMD with VMD resulted in higher permeate production and productivity/size ratio compared to the traditional way of operating DCMD units in series.

Comprehensive insights into the organic fractions on solid-liquid separation performance of anaerobic digestates from food waste

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the solid-liquid separation performance of digestates from food waste is primarily affected by differences in organic fractions, with varying levels of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in different cities influencing dewaterability. The correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between soluble protein content and dewaterability, indicating that lower soluble protein levels result in better dewatering performance in digestates.

Ammonia recovery from simulated anaerobic digestate using a two-stage direct contact membrane distillation process

Bing Xu et al.

Summary: A two-stage direct contact membrane distillation system is developed for efficient removal and recovery of ammonia from anaerobic digestate. A high initial pH of the feed solution is crucial for achieving high ammonia removal, while minimizing the volume of permeate solution can increase the concentration of ammonia.

Antifouling Membranes Based on Cellulose Acetate (CA) Blended with Poly(acrylic acid) for Heavy Metal Remediation

Ibtissem Ounifi et al.

Summary: The study developed novel fouling-resistant ultrafiltration (UF) membranes for Cadmium (Cd) remediation by combining cellulose acetate (CA) with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) through a blending method. Increasing the concentration of PAA in the casting solution was found beneficial in improving the flux recovery ratio (FRR) and reducing the total fouling ratio (Rt). Overall, PAA is an effective additive for preparing CA membranes with enhanced antifouling properties for the remediation of water bodies contaminated by heavy metals via UF process.

Optimal cleaning strategy to alleviate fouling in membrane distillation process to treat anaerobic digestate

Amine Charfi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates membrane fouling in DCMD treating anaerobic digestion sludge, defining an optimal cleaning strategy involving DI water flushing, sodium hypochlorite and citric acid cleaning. The study determines the optimal cross-flow velocity to avoid severe fouling and establishes that a cleaning duration of 60 minutes for each chemical cleaning every two days is the best strategy for membrane regeneration and process productivity. Additionally, the research shows that both external and internal fouling contribute to permeate flux decline in MD treating real wastewater.
