Heat integration and dynamic control for separating the ternary azeotrope of butanone/isopropanol/n-heptane via pressure-swing distillation

Fangkun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated an economical and robust triple column pressure-swing distillation (TCPSD) process for separating the butanone/isopropanol/n-heptane ternary azeotrope. By optimizing the process for minimum total annual cost (TAC) and investigating heat integration, it was shown that TCPSD is feasible for separating the ternary mixture. Heat integration can significantly reduce TAC, with the fully integrated scheme showing the best economic and anti-disturbance performance.

Cyclohexane and benzene separation by fixed-bed adsorption on activated carbons prepared from coconut shell

Aniyohana Valencia et al.

Summary: New activated carbons were prepared from coconut shell to separate benzene and cyclohexane. The best preparation conditions were identified using a Taguchi experimental design. The activating agent, impregnation ratio, and physical activation time were found to be the most important variables. The activated carbon obtained with ZnCl2 showed the highest adsorption properties for benzene and cyclohexane separation at an industrial level.

Design and control of an energy-efficient triple-column pressure swing distillation configuration for separation of acetone-methanol-hexane mixture

Tan Akinciturk et al.

Summary: In this study, two alternative triple-column pressure swing distillation (PSD) configurations were proposed for a ternary mixture, and the total annual cost was analyzed based on ternary maps at different pressures. The results showed that the methanol-acetone-hexane (M-A-H) separation sequence with a column configuration operating at 0.5, 1, and 5 bar had better economic performance, and the fully heat-integrated M-A-H configuration further saved costs.

Analysis and performance enhancement of heat pump technology assisted pressure-swing distillation process in the separation of azeotropic mixtures

Xinhao Li et al.

Summary: This paper proposes the use of a vapor recompressed heat pump assisted pressure-swing distillation process (VRC-PSD) for the separation of ethyl acetate/n-hexane and THF/ethanol/water. The results demonstrate that all VRC-PSD schemes perform better than the corresponding PSD schemes in terms of economics, energy saving, and thermodynamic efficiency.

Summary: Two novel processes combining liquid-liquid extraction with extractive distillation or azeotropic distillation are proposed to reduce energy consumption and improve the efficiency of IBE purification. The results show that the thermal integrated process of liquid-liquid extraction combined with extractive distillation is the best design, with significantly reduced energy consumption.

Meng-Lin Tsai et al.

Summary: A new design principle for the separation of benzene/isopmpanol/water ternary mixture was proposed using a triple-column side-stream extractive distillation system, which achieved significant cost savings through energy-efficient operation. Simulation results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed heat-integrated design and overall control strategy in maintaining high purity of the products without the need for an online composition analyzer.

Design and optimization for the separation of tetrahydrofuran/isopropanol/water using heat pump assisted heat-integrated extractive distillation

Yinggui Xu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the separation of a ternary mixture using extractive distillation, with dimethyl sulfoxide as the optimal solvent. By introducing vapor recompressed heat pump technology and heat integration, significant energy savings were achieved. Direct extractive distillation was found to be better than indirect extractive distillation, with double-heat pump assisted direct extractive distillation showing the best performance in energy conservation and cost reduction.

Enhance glycerol conversion through co-etherification with isobutene and tert-butanol

Jingjun Liu et al.

Summary: Tert-butyl glycerol ethers are desirable fuel additives obtained through etherification of glycerol with isobutene or tert-butanol. Co-etherification can enhance glycerol conversion, with isobutene leading to higher conversion and yield of poly-substituted ethers compared to tert-butanol alone. Additionally, the presence of tert-butanol effectively inhibits undesired isobutene dimerization.
