Origins of Electron-Transfer Regime in Persulfate-Based Nonradical Oxidation Processes

Wei Ren et al.

Summary: This review discusses the use of persulfate-based nonradical oxidation processes (PS-NOPs) in wastewater purification, focusing on recent advances in nonradical electron-transfer regimes, including design of catalysts, in situ/operando characterization/analytics, and understanding the origins of electron-transfer mechanisms. The study found that persulfate is activated by a catalyst to form surface activated complexes, which interact directly or indirectly with target pollutants for oxidation.

CNT encapsulated MnOx for an enhanced flow-through electro-Fenton process: the involvement of Mn(IV)

Dongli Guo et al.

Summary: This study presents a nanoconfined flow-through electro-Fenton system for efficient degradation of aqueous micropollutants. By using a functional electroactive carbon nanotube cathodic filter with encapsulated MnOx nanoparticles, the system generates hydrogen peroxide in situ, which is then converted to reactive oxygen species by the redox cycling of Mn(IV)/Mn(III). Compared to the conventional batch reactor, the flow-through configuration demonstrates superior performance due to convection-enhanced mass transport. These findings have implications for the development of highly efficient and integrated systems for environmental remediation based on materials science, Fenton chemistry, and microfiltration techniques.

Silicate-Enhanced Heterogeneous Flow-Through Electro-Fenton System Using Iron Oxides under Nanoconfinement

Dongli Guo et al.

Summary: A silicate-enhanced flow-through electro-Fenton system with a nanoconfined catalyst was designed and demonstrated for efficient, rapid, and selective degradation of antibiotic tetracycline. The system utilized Fe2O3 nanoparticle filled carbon nanotube filter to generate in situ H2O2 and convert it to reactive oxygen species for degradation. The presence of silicate electrolyte significantly boosted H2O2 yield and the flow-through configuration offered improved degradation kinetics compared to conventional batch reactors.
