Concentration-dependent chloride effect on radical distribution and micropollutant degradation in the sulfate radical-based AOPs

Bo Sun et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively evaluated the effect of chloride (Cl-) on radical distribution and micropollutant degradation in the UV/peroxydisulfate AOP. The results showed that Cl- significantly scavenged SO4•- and transformed it into HO• and then into Cl2•-. Bicarbonate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) had a stronger inhibitory effect on micropollutant degradation in the presence of Cl- due to the consumption of Cl2•-. The model predicted the radical concentrations and degradation contributions of 34 micropollutants in different Cl- concentrations.
