Quaternary ammonium siloxane-decorated magnetic nanoparticles for emulsified oil-water separation

Ting Lu et al.

Summary: Rapid demulsification of oil-water emulsion is crucial for oil utilization and environmental protection. Quaternary ammonium siloxane-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized and showed higher demulsification efficiency than previous siloxane-modified MNPs. The demulsification performance of the MNPs could be adjusted by regulating the DOTAC anchoring density on the MNP surface. These modified MNPs demonstrated good separation performance in oil-water emulsion and could be easily recycled.

Summary: This review introduces the application of chemical demulsifiers in the recovery of oil from water and water from oil. Different types of surfactants involved in emulsion formation and stability enhancement are discussed, and promising demulsifiers such as nanoparticles, hyperbranched polymers, and ionic liquids are explored. Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles and hyperbranched polymers achieve high oil recovery rates, while ionic liquids have limitations due to their high cost. Nanoparticles show excellent oil recovery behavior at low concentrations and ambient temperature.

Revealing the non-covalent interactions between oxygen-containing demulsifiers and interfacially active asphaltenes: A multi-level computational simulation

Changqing He et al.

Summary: Non-covalent interactions dominate the process of demulsification, and a hierarchical-three-level method combining density functional theory (DFT) simulation is proposed to study the non-covalent interactions between a demulsifier and asphaltenes. The demulsifier molecules break emulsions through electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, and dispersion effects. A new solvent model is proposed for the oil-water interface system. This research provides insights for the development of new functional demulsifiers based on structural characteristics and non-covalent interactions.

Transcriptomic insights into lower biomass and higher cell-surface hydrophobicity of Dietzia natronolimnaea S-XJ-1 grown on alkanes compared to fatty acid esters

Lexue Li et al.

Summary: The production of microbial biomass, microbial cell properties, and biological function are significantly influenced by different hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs). This study investigated the metabolic responses in Dietzia natronolimnaea S-XJ-1, a biodemulsifier, when utilizing alkanes and fatty acid esters as HOCs. The transcriptomic analyses revealed the upregulation of ATP-binding cassette transporters and the downregulation of transporters for hydrophilic nutrients and cell division genes, which may explain the lower biomass production in liquid paraffin-cultured S-XJ-1. In addition, the upregulation of genes involved in surface protein biosynthesis, poly-L-glutamine layer, and mycolic acids enhanced the cell-surface hydrophobicity and biodemulsifying activity of liquid paraffin-cultured S-XJ-1. These findings can contribute to the design of more effective biodemulsifiers and deepen our understanding of complex metabolic responses induced by different HOCs.
