Techno-economic assessment of a hybrid forward osmosis and membrane distillation system for agricultural water recovery

Agata Zarebska-Molgaard et al.

Summary: Despite the potential of FO-MD hybrid process in treating AD effluents, the obtained water fluxes are currently too low for industrial application. The energy consumption of the FO-MD system is much lower than the energy produced from AD effluents. The cost of water produced by the FO-MD system is influenced by the membrane module cost and the minimum water flux required for cost efficiency is identified.

Pilot testing of a novel Multi Effect Distillation (MED) technology for seawater desalination

Shahzada Aly et al.

Summary: This study introduces an improved evaporator design for Multi Effect Distillation (MED) to reduce thermal losses and footprint, which has been validated through a pilot plant with a capacity of 25m³/day. The design reduces heat transfer area, capital cost, and footprint of the desalination plant, showing potential for industrial applications of high salinity byproduct and solar desalination.

The influence of engineering factors on the efficiency of a spiral wound forward osmosis system: Performance and economic evaluation

Sung-Ju Im et al.

Summary: This study evaluated three different scale commercialized spiral wound forward osmosis elements, each with unique optimal operating conditions. Factors such as dimension, performance, and element design determine the operating conditions and plant capacity of the process. The research also investigated engineering factors for possible commercialization of a SWFO-RO hybrid system, finding that the 8040 SW element is 24% more economically efficient than the 2540 SW element due to satisfying minimum capital cost requirements.

Laboratory and pilot evaluation of aquaporin-based forward osmosis membranes for rejection of micropollutants

Rui Li et al.

Summary: Aquaporin-based forward osmosis (AQP FO) membranes were used in laboratory and pilot-scale experiments to remove micropollutants from water. Results showed high rejection rates for most micropollutants, with only a few compounds passing through the membrane to some extent. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of the AQP FO system in removing micropollutants from water.

Forward osmosis system design and optimization using a commercial cellulose triacetate hollow fibre membrane module for energy efficient desalination

Syed Muztuza Ali et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop mathematical design models for energy efficient desalination using forward osmosis. The models were validated with experimental data and used to optimize system design, ultimately reducing energy consumption. The study found that a commercial hollow fibre membrane module was more energy efficient compared to a spiral wound membrane module.
