Evaluation of the sustainability of technologies to recycle spent lithium-ion batteries, based on embodied energy and carbon footprint

Soft clustering of retired lithium-ion batteries for the secondary utilization using Gaussian mixture model based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

Summary: This study proposes a soft clustering method based on the Gaussian mixture model and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to rapidly and accurately classify and regroup retired lithium-ion batteries. By extracting multidimensional clustering criteria from EIS and estimating capacity using a neural network, the soft clustering of retired batteries is achieved. Experimental results show that the consistency of regrouped batteries using the proposed soft clustering method is nearly doubled compared to randomly regrouped batteries.

Investigating greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts from the production of lithium-ion batteries in China

Summary: This study investigates eleven ecological metrics of six typical types of LIBs using the life cycle assessment method based on local data in China, and evaluates the ecological impacts and carbon neutralization potential of battery production. The results show that the ecological indexes of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are better than ternary batteries, prioritizing LFP batteries can reduce environmental damage. Furthermore, the study predicts a reduction in GHG emissions from battery production in China by at least 30% and 90% in 2030 and 2060, respectively, compared to 2020, indicating the importance of green energy in achieving carbon neutralization in battery production.

Investigating carbon footprint and carbon reduction potential using a cradle-to-cradle LCA approach on lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles in China

Comprehensive recovery of NCM cathode materials for spent lithium-ion batteries by microfluidic device

Summary: With the expansion of the lithium-ion battery market, the need for comprehensive recycling of cathode materials has increased. This study presents a comprehensive recovery system for the leachate from spent NCM cathode materials using microextraction equipment. A co-extraction method was developed to separate the MnCo-Ni from Li ions in the leachate. The extraction effects of different extractants were investigated, and a co-extraction pattern using a mixed extractant was established. The mechanism of saponification and extraction with the mixed extractant was explained using IR spectral results. The lithium ion was recovered via precipitation, resulting in regenerated lithium carbonate with high purity. The study successfully established a comprehensive extractive recovery process for Mn-Co-Ni with high recovery efficiencies.
