Insight into mass transfer mechanism and equilibrium modeling of heavy metals adsorption on hierarchically porous biochar

Jiawen Wu et al.

Summary: The one-step pyrolysis of biomass/zinc salts composites revealed that zinc salts not only promoted the pyrolysis of biomass, but also generated volatile gas and thermally removable pores templates in situ. This led to the formation of hierarchical porous biochar with significantly increased pore volume and large specific surface areas. Numerical simulation using the pore volume and surface diffusion model (PVSDM) demonstrated that the improved biochar pore structure enhanced the pore volume diffusion of heavy metals during their adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of different heavy metals (Pb2+ and Cd2+) on the hierarchical porous biochar was also investigated.

Xin Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel magnetic nanoadsorbent was successfully synthesized, which exhibited water stability and biocompatibility in wastewater, and showed high selective capture for Pb(II) and Cu(II). The nanoadsorbent retained high uptake capacity after multiple cycles and had weak interference from other ions. The mechanism of interaction between the nanoadsorbent and heavy metal ions was analyzed based on electrostatic potential and average local ionization energy. The results showed that the interaction was bridged by oxygen active sites. This hierarchical and highly water-dispersible nanoadsorbent has the potential to be used for wastewater treatment.
