Versatility, Cost Analysis, and Scale-up in Fluoride and Arsenic Removal Using Metal-organic Framework-based Adsorbents

Linisha Biswal et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel approach for fluoride and arsenic removal, with high surface area, versatile building blocks and numerous active sites. Despite the lower yield compared to conventional adsorbents, MOFs' high adsorption capacity, tailored chemical structure, and ionic uptake of fluoride and arsenic make them a more favorable option than many other adsorbents. The cost of different MOFs usually varies between 0.1 and 5 US$/g depending on the synthesis routes.

Reuse of secondary aluminum ash: Study on removal of fluoride from industrial wastewater by mesoporous alumina modified with citric acid

Yuan Li et al.

Summary: Loading citric acid as a modifier onto the surface of mesoporous alumina synthesized from industrial solid waste secondary aluminum ash can produce highly efficient fluoride removing adsorbents. The modified adsorbent demonstrates stable adsorption properties under acidic conditions, reaching equilibrium quickly and maintaining good cycling performance. Ion exchange between -OH and fluoride is the main process of fluoride adsorption, and the introduction of citric acid increases the amount of -OH in the adsorbent. Coexisting anions, particularly PO43- and CO32-, have a significant influence on fluoride adsorption.
