Ionic liquid-modified chitosan fibers for Au(I) recovery from waste printed circuit boards bioleachate: Preparation, adsorption mechanism, and application

Xiaoyu Lin et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to develop an eco-friendly adsorbent based on ionic liquid (IL) to selectively recover Au (I) from bioleachate and to understand its adsorption mechanism. IL-modified chitosan fibers (ILCFs) were prepared as a fast and highly efficient adsorbent for Au(I) recovery under alkaline conditions. The ILCFs exhibited a uniform cross-sectional diameter of 31.2 +/- 1.1 μm. Characterization using SEM, FT-IR, and XPS revealed the adsorption mechanism of Au(I) on ILCFs. The maximum Au(I) adsorption capacity of the ILCFs was found to be 357.0 +/- 13.2 mg/g based on the Langmuir model. An adsorption equilibrium was reached within 7 minutes, with rate constants of pseudo-1st-order and pseudo-2nd-order being 0.8912 +/- 0.0569 1/min and 0.0049 +/- 0.0002 g/mg min, respectively. Furthermore, the ILCFs exhibited high selectivity for Au(I) in waste printed circuit board bioleachate. The developed ILCFs are effective in selectively adsorbing Au(I) and have potential in recovering it from urban mining bioleachates.

A strategy of synergistically using ether oxygen and phenolic hydroxyl groups for Ultra-High selective and fast Cs+ isolation

Zihao Xu et al.

Summary: Hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) with synergistic effect of ether oxygen and phenolic hydroxyl groups were designed and fabricated for Cs+ isolation in the salt lake system. The content of the ether oxygen group in the frameworks was regulated to significantly increase the separation factors (S.F.)(Cs+/K+) of the adsorbents. PO-HCPs-6 showed nearly 5 times higher separation factor than other Cs+ adsorbents, with an ultra-high value of 57. The mild polymerization process resulted in an extremely fast kinetic adsorption rate, where PO-HCPs-6 reached 90% of the equilibrium adsorption capacity in just 1 minute. After 5 times adsorption-desorption experiments, PO-HCPs-6 demonstrated remarkable elution rate (> 92%) and reusability adsorption capacity (> 91%), indicating its inspiring application potential for Cs+ isolation in the salt lake brine system.
