Summary: The dynamic processes of heavy metal deposition in two major tributaries of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River were explored using sediment cores. Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the relationships between heavy metals and various physicochemical properties. Pb isotope dating was used to determine the sediment chronological sequences, and sediment fluxes of heavy metals were calculated. Redundancy analysis was used to analyze the differences in driving factors between the two watersheds. The results showed that heavy metal deposition in both sediment cores was higher than background values, with Cd being the most exceeded heavy metal in both tributaries, and that heavy metal deposition was influenced by precipitation and runoff.

Summary: Long-term environmental exposure to heavy metals leads to genetic mutations, and different heavy metals induce different mutation features. Genes with mutations show higher similarity within the same exposure regime and lower similarity between different exposure regimes. Mutated genes are associated with fundamental cellular processes such as metabolism, motility, and transport.

Summary: This study presents a chemosensor integrating automatic sample metering, on-chip reaction, gravitational-magnetic separation, and distance-based readout for visual quantification of multiple heavy metal ions. The integration of various components in a microfluidic chip allows for simplified and user-friendly operation. The achieved limits of detection for different heavy metal ions are below the maximum contamination levels, demonstrating the high sensitivity of the device. Moreover, simultaneous detection of heavy metal ions in different water samples is achieved with high accuracy, making it a promising platform for rapid on-site sensing.

Summary: Efforts to use RNA-cleaving DNA enzymes as gene-silencing agents have been hindered by low efficacy in clinical trials, but a new xeno-nucleic-acid-modified DNAzyme called X10-23 has shown promise in achieving multiple-turnover activity and resisting nuclease digestion in cellular conditions. X10-23 overcomes product inhibition and facilitates persistent gene silencing in mammalian cells, suggesting new molecular chemotypes can enhance the activity and stability of DNAzymes for potential therapeutic applications.
