Broadside-coupling-enabled insulator-to-metal transition in a terahertz metasurface

Soumyajyoti Mallick et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of stacked dipole resonators and a vanadium dioxide film to achieve stronger field confinement and tunable metasurfaces in the terahertz frequency range. The insulator-to-metal transition in the vanadium dioxide spacer layer is realized under intense terahertz excitation, leading to adjustable frequency and amplitude metasurfaces. The enhanced field confinement triggers increased conductivity in the vanadium dioxide layer, enabling the development of active metamaterial devices in the terahertz domain.

Fano resonance in a dolomite phase-change multilayer design for dynamically tunable omnidirectional monochromatic thermal emission

Zahra Rahimian Omam et al.

Summary: In this study, we reveal the unprecedented optical phonon response of dolomite thin film in the design of a planar ultra-narrowband mid-infrared thermal emitter. By utilizing strong interference in the Al-dolomite bilayer, we achieve a lithography-free planar thermal emitter with near-unity omnidirectional emission at a specific resonance wavelength. Further incorporation of vanadium dioxide phase change material enables dynamic spectral tunability with hybrid Fano resonances. The findings of this study have multiple applications in fields such as biosensing, gas sensing, and thermal emission.

Magnetic wire: transverse magnetism in a one-dimensional plasmonic system

Subhajit Karmakar et al.

Summary: In this study, a magnetic wire in a coupled, cut-wire pair-based metasurface operating at terahertz frequencies is experimentally demonstrated. Through asymmetry-induced polymorphic hybridization, it is possible to transform an electric wire into a magnetic wire and obtain non-radiative current distributions in the system. This versatile platform has potential applications in photonic/electrical integrated circuits.

Active Control of Nanodielectric-Induced THz Quasi-BIC in Flexible Metasurfaces: A Platform for Modulation and Sensing

Thomas CaiWei Tan et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the creation of a dynamically controllable quasi-bound state in the continuum (QBIC) with ultrahigh quality factor by embedding nanometric dielectric or semiconductor layers on a symmetric metallic metasurface at terahertz frequencies. The photoexcitation of nanostrips of germanium enables ultrafast switching of a QBIC resonance with significant transmission intensity modulation, presenting opportunities for active micro-nanophotonic devices. An optimization model is provided for (switchable) QBIC resonances in metamaterial arrays, which can serve as an enabling platform for active micro-nanophotonic devices.

Floating terahertz metamaterials with extremely large refractive index sensitivities

Harry Miyosi Silalahi et al.

Summary: A simple method is proposed to increase the refractive index sensitivities of terahertz metamaterials, enabling them to detect low-concentration proteins and potentially dangerous viruses. The floating terahertz metamaterial provides an extremely large refractive index sensitivity of 532 GHz/RIU and is a significant achievement in the development of protein sensors.
