Reference signal less Fourier analysis based motion artifact removal algorithm for wearable photoplethysmography devices to estimate heart rate during physical exercises

Pankaj et al.

Summary: The paper proposes an algorithm for real-time heart rate estimation using Fourier decomposition and fast Fourier transform to suppress motion artifacts, achieving accurate PPG signal reconstruction. Evaluation on publicly available datasets demonstrates the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method compared to state-of-the-art techniques.

A Review on Computation Methods Used in Photoplethysmography Signal Analysis for Heart Rate Estimation

Pankaj et al.

Summary: Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor-enabled wearable health monitoring devices can monitor realtime health status by measuring volumetric changes in blood during a cardiac cycle. Efficient removal of motion artifacts is crucial before extracting vital sign information like heart rate with PPG sensor. Research on denoising and heart rate peak detection with PPG technologies aims to explore methods and challenges related to motion artifacts removal and heart rate estimation from PPG-enabled wearable devices.

Validity of the Polar H10 Sensor for Heart Rate Variability Analysis during Resting State and Incremental Exercise in Recreational Men and Women

Marcelle Schaffarczyk et al.

Summary: This study compares the HRV data obtained from the Polar H10 sensor chest strap device and an electrocardiogram (ECG) for measuring heart rate variability. The results showed high correlations between the two recording systems in resting and incremental exercise conditions. However, significant bias was found during the exercise test, particularly for the non-linear metric of HRV analysis, DFA a1. Linear HRV measurements derived from the Polar H10 chest strap device are recommended for practitioners, but caution should be taken with DFA a1 measurements, especially during higher exercise intensities.

Association of Adverse Childhood Experiences With Cardiovascular Disease Later in Life A Review

Lucas C. Godoy et al.

Summary: ACEs, which encompass abuse, household dysfunction, and neglect, chronically activate the stress response system and lead to dysfunction in autonomic, neuroendocrine, and inflammatory pathways. Adults with 4 or more ACEs have over a 2-fold higher risk of developing CVD and almost 2-fold higher risk of premature mortality. Strategies for CVD prevention through ACE management in adults lack sufficient evidence, highlighting the need for better approaches to mitigate the health consequences of ACEs.

The Acceptability, Feasibility, and Effectiveness of Wearable Activity Trackers for Increasing Physical Activity in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review

Amy Creaser et al.

Summary: This study examined the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of wearables in increasing physical activity in 5 to 19-year-olds. It found that wearables may enhance motivation for physical activity through self-monitoring, goal setting, feedback, and competition, but technical difficulties and novelty effects could affect long-term use. More rigorous and long-term studies are needed in this age group.

Brno University of Technology Smartphone PPG Database (BUT PPG): Annotated Dataset for PPG Quality Assessment and Heart Rate Estimation

Andrea Nemcova et al.

Summary: This article introduces the BUT PPG database created by Brno University of Technology for evaluating PPG signal quality and HR estimation. The database contains 48 10-second recordings of PPG signals and associated ECG signals from 12 subjects. Each PPG signal includes manual annotation of quality and reference HR, making it a unique tool for the development of smart, user-friendly, cheap, on-the-spot, self-home-monitoring of heart rate.
