Toward Blue Skies: City-Scale Air Pollution Monitoring Using UAVs

Naser Hossein Motlagh et al.

Summary: Poor air quality is a global concern, leading to the adoption of air quality monitoring technology. Understanding the health effects of pollutants requires capturing their distribution and dispersion, which is currently difficult. This article proposes city-scale air pollution monitoring using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to complement ground and infrastructure-based measurements, providing a vertical profile of pollutants. The article highlights requirements, challenges, benefits of UAV measurements, and presents a research roadmap for the future.

Autonomous Multi-Rotor Aerial Platform for Air Pollution Monitoring

Alexandru Cozma et al.

Summary: In recent years, scientists have shown increasing concern for air quality, particularly in large cities and industrialized areas. Continuous monitoring of air quality is vital in investigating the causes and reducing pollution. This paper presents a new autonomous multi-rotor aerial platform to perform real-time monitoring of air quality in large cities, providing detailed heat-maps of pollution levels at different altitudes.

Spatial and Temporal Analysis of Impacts of Hurricane Florence on Criteria Air Pollutants and Air Toxics in Eastern North Carolina

Sharmila Bhandari et al.

Summary: This study conducted a spatiotemporal analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) and criteria air pollutants in North Carolina during and after Hurricane Florence. The results showed that only benzene and PM2.5 were present at levels of potential concern, with localized increases near fueling stations.
