Neuroanatomical correlates of system-justifying ideologies: a pre-registered voxel-based morphometry study on right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation

Jan Paolo M. Balagtas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neuroanatomical correlates of right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and social dominance orientation (SDO) in a Singaporean sample. The results showed a strong correlation between RWA and SDO scores, but no significant brain regions associated with these ideologies were found.

They Wanted to Talk to a 'Real Doctor': Predictors, Perpetrators, and Experiences of Racial and Ethnic Discrimination Among Healthcare Workers

Rachel Hennein et al.

Summary: The study focused on assessing the prevalence, perpetrators, and narratives of racial discrimination among healthcare workers in academic hospitals. Findings showed that a significant percentage of healthcare workers of color, especially females from underrepresented backgrounds and Asian males, reported experiencing discrimination. Discrimination was reported from various sources including patients, teachers, supervisors, co-workers, and institutions. The study also highlighted that the murder of George Floyd intensified URM healthcare workers' experiences of discrimination and that Asian healthcare workers faced discrimination related to pandemic-related anti-Asian violence. The study concluded with recommendations for hospitals to create programs that improve inclusivity and support for healthcare workers.

The Development of Intergroup Cooperation: Children Show Impartial Fairness and Biased Care

John Corbit et al.

Summary: One of the most remarkable features of human societies is our ability to cooperate with each other. However, this cooperative ability is not extended to everyone as human societies often show a division between in-group and out-group members. This study investigated the impact of in-group bias on the developmental emergence of concerns for fairness and care, and found that fairness and care develop along distinct pathways with independent motivational supports.

Stronger brain activation for own baby but similar activation toward babies of own and different ethnicities in parents living in a multicultural environment

Bindiya Lakshmi Raghunath et al.

Summary: Specific facial features in infants automatically elicit attention, affection, and nurturing behavior of adults, known as the baby schema effect. There is also an innate tendency to categorize people into in-group and out-group members based on salient features such as ethnicity. This study used fMRI to examine parents' neural responses to infants of different ethnicities and kinship relationships. The findings revealed that parents showed similar brain activations, regardless of ethnicity and kinship, in regions associated with attention, reward processing, empathy, memory, goal-directed action planning, and social cognition. These regions were activated to a higher degree when viewing the parents' own infant.

Neural basis of in-group bias and prejudices: A systematic meta-analysis

Aino Saarinen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neural correlates of inter-group biases through a meta-analysis of fMRI studies, revealing specific brain regions involved in responses to in-group and out-group stimuli. The findings suggest that inter-group biases may be context-specific, with different brain regions activated based on the type of group membership. The results provide implications for theory development and interventions to reduce prejudice.

Influences of Social Distancing and attachment styles on the strength of the Halo Effect

Giulio Gabrieli et al.

Summary: The Halo Effect, the relationship between Aesthetic Appearance and perceived Trustworthiness, and the impact of individuals' attachment styles on emotional responses during the COVID-19 pandemic were studied. Results showed that attachment styles influence the strength of the Halo Effect, but do not necessarily lead to differences in the magnitude of changes after social priming. This sheds light on how attachment styles play a role in individuals' impression formation.
