Tiredness Takes its Toll: An Integrative Review on Sleep and Occupational Outcomes for Long-Term Care Workers

Elizabeth Keller et al.

Summary: Poor sleep quality and duration among health care professionals have negative impacts on worker safety, work readiness, and well-being. However, the consequences of impaired sleep among long-term care (LTC) workers remain understudied. The current review explored associations between sleep and occupational outcomes in LTC workers and found that poor sleep quality and duration were related to burnout/fatigue, mental and physical health issues, and overall well-being. Further research is needed to better understand the impacts of impaired sleep on worker outcomes and patient care quality.

Cross-Platform Implementation of an SSVEP-Based BCI for the Control of a 6-DOF Robotic Arm

Eduardo Quiles et al.

Summary: This study tested the feasibility of a low-cost robotic arm control system with an EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI). The system utilized the Steady State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) paradigm and specific control software to communicate and integrate with the robot, allowing for robotic arm control. The use of a reduced number of dry electrodes facilitated the system's usability.

Enhancing the Sense of Attention from an Assistance Mobile Robot by Improving Eye-Gaze Contact from Its Iconic Face Displayed on a Flat Screen

Elena Rubies et al.

Summary: This paper presents how to enhance the sense of attention through the facial expression and gaze of a humanoid mobile robot. The problems of simulating 3D spherical eyes in a 2D image are addressed by manually calibrating the gaze and implementing cyclic face explorations. Blinking and small movements of the mouth are also used to further enhance the sense of attention.

Human-Robot Interaction in Industrial Settings: Perception of Multiple Participants at a Crossroad Intersection Scenario with Different Courtesy Cues

Carla Alves et al.

Summary: In environments shared with humans, it is important for Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) to have human-aware motion-planning skills and legible robot movement. This study evaluated humans' perceptions of different AMR courtesy behaviors and assessed trust, legibility, and behavioral analysis as metrics. The results showed that the retreating and decelerate courtesy cues were better perceived from the forward view.
