Contactless Sensing of Water Properties for Smart Monitoring of Pipelines

Christian Riboldi et al.

Summary: To simplify the installation of sensors, we demonstrate the clamping of piezoelectric transducers and strip electrodes on plastic pipes for measurement of water flow rate, temperature, and impedance. Experimental results validate the sensors in realistic conditions, and tradeoffs in accuracy, deployment, and fabrication are discussed.

Electrically functional water sensing duct tape suitable for detection of indoor pinhole leakages with high spatial and temporal resolution

Junxian Quan et al.

Summary: We propose an electrically functional water sensing duct tape for continuous monitoring of pinhole water leaks along indoor pipes or walls. It consists of a dielectric wick sandwiched between flexible electrodes and is powered and monitored by an electronic control unit. The tape detects water droplets through changes in electrical impedance. It offers unparalleled spatial and temporal monitoring at low costs, enabling early detection of pinhole leakages and prevention of substantial building damage.

Water Leak Localization Using High-Resolution Pressure Sensors

Daniel Levinas et al.

Summary: The article presents a new method for identifying leaking pipes within pressurized water distribution systems using transient modeling. It predicts leaking pipes by analyzing water network data and classifying it with the K-nearest neighbors algorithm. The model performed well in basic scenarios but had lower accuracy in interpolated scenarios.

Interdigital Capacitive Sensor for Cable Insulation Defect Detection: Three-Dimensional Modeling, Design, and Experimental Test

Bing Luo et al.

Summary: XLPE cables are widely used in power systems due to their excellent electrical and mechanical properties. Poor manufacturing techniques in cable joint production and installation can lead to insulation defects. The IDC sensor, with its simple structure and non-contact advantages, shows great potential for online monitoring of XLPE cables. This paper focuses on the 3D modeling of a fully covered IDC sensor for cable insulation detection, discussing the electric field distributions, sensitivity variations, and optimization of sensor parameters to reduce fringe capacitance influence. Ultimately, the study highlights the importance of air gaps between the sensor and XLPE cable in simulation and experimental differences, and presents results on using different types of sensors to detect cable joint defects under various excitation voltage frequencies.

A Low-Cost Flexible Pipe Sheath for Multi-Parameter Monitoring of Water Distribution

Ilenia D'Adda et al.

Summary: This study introduces a low-cost flexible pipe sheath for detecting water leakage, conductivity, and temperature through impedance measurements. Finite-element simulations demonstrate the capability to detect leaks as small as 1 liter across a 2-meter pipe length, with a 1% change in impedance easily detectable using off-the-shelf impedance chips.
