In-Situ 5G NR Base Station Exposure of the General Public: Comparison of Assessment Methods

Kenneth Deprez et al.

Summary: New measurement methods and equipment are proposed for assessing electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure in 5G New Radio (NR) networks. The study finds that in a scenario with only self-generated traffic, different measurement equipment shows minimal difference in maximum extrapolated field exposure (E-max) and instantaneous time-averaged exposure (E-avg). However, in a more realistic scenario with multiple user equipment (UE) collocated, E-avg is influenced by other users while E-max is not affected. A broadband measurement can provide an initial understanding of RF-EMF exposure up to 700 m, but is insufficient for assessing 5G NR exposure.
