Near-Field High-Resolution Maps of the Ridgecrest Earthquakes from Aerial Imagery

Alba M. Rodriguez Padilla et al.

Summary: High-resolution maps of the surface rupture of the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes, derived from aerial imagery and unmanned aerial vehicle imagery, provide detailed information on the rupture styles and near-field deformation. These maps capture secondary fracturing, lateral spreading, and liquefaction features that cannot be resolved by other methods such as airborne lidar data or field mapping. The data presented in this study offer opportunities for machine learning training, kinematic analysis, and probabilistic displacement hazard analysis.

Coseismic surface ruptures, slip distribution, and 3D seismogenic fault for the 2021 Mw 7.3 Maduo earthquake, central Tibetan Plateau, and its tectonic implications

Junjie Ren et al.

Summary: The 2021 Mw 7.3 Maduo earthquake occurred in the high mountain area of the internal Bayan Har Block in the central Tibetan Plateau. The surface rupture zone was approximately 154 km in length, indicating a dominant left-lateral strike-slip motion. The occurrence of the Maduo earthquake challenges previous models for predicting earthquakes in the block interior. It is necessary to reassess seismic hazard along intra-block faults with low strain rates.

Field Response and Surface-Rupture Characteristics of the 2020 M 6.5 Monte Cristo Range Earthquake, Central Walker Lane, Nevada

Rich D. Koehler et al.

Summary: The M 6.5 Monte Cristo Range earthquake in the central Walker Lane on 15 May 2020 was the largest earthquake in Nevada in 66 years, leading to a multidisciplinary scientific field response. The earthquake was caused by left-lateral slip along unmapped sections of the Candelaria fault, resulting in distinct differences in fracture style and orientation along the 28 km rupture zone. The complex surface rupture pattern suggests that slip partitioning between east-striking left-lateral faults and north to northwest-striking right-lateral faults plays a crucial role in accommodating northwest-directed transtension in the central Walker Lane.

Semiautomatic Algorithm to Map Tectonic Faults and Measure Scarp Height from Topography Applied to the Volcanic Tablelands and the Hurricane Fault, Western US

Chelsea P. Scott et al.

Summary: Observations of fault geometry and slip distribution are important constraints on fault behavior. High-resolution topography data can help in studying these aspects, but manual mapping of faults is time-consuming. A novel algorithm has been developed to systematically map faults and measure scarp height, reducing the time required for analysis and increasing applicability to various geomorphic and tectonic settings.

Automatic Fault Mapping in Remote Optical Images and Topographic Data With Deep Learning

Lionel Matteo et al.

Summary: The study introduces a machine learning approach using a U-Net Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to automate the identification and mapping of fractures and faults in optical images and topographic data. By training the CNN model, it can accurately and quickly map fault networks in image data of various types and resolutions.
