Morphology and distribution of submerged palaeoshorelines: Insights from the North West Shelf of Australia

Ulysse Lebrec et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method to identify submerged coastal features using geophysical data and presents the findings from a study of the Rowley Shelf in Australia. The study identifies specific depths where submerged coastal features are concentrated, called modal sea-level depths, and reveals the influence of these features on shelf morphologies. The study also provides new insights into the processes shaping carbonate provinces.

Principles of seismic stratigraphy and seismic geomorphology I: Extracting geologic insights from seismic data

Henry W. Posamentier et al.

Summary: This article introduces tools and rules for extracting geological information from seismic data, with the key principle being the integration of seismic stratigraphy and seismic geomorphology and the need for consistent interpretation. The article also presents multiple analytical approaches to achieve consistent and reasonable interpretation of depositional environments and lithofacies, highlighting the importance of context in interpreting non-unique patterns.

Early Miocene carbonate ramp development in a warm ocean, North West Shelf, Australia

Rosine Riera et al.

Summary: This study investigates the environmental influences on platform evolution by combining macroscopic and petrographic descriptions of early Miocene strata in the Australian North West Shelf. The results suggest that the ramp was formed in an oligotrophic and warm ocean environment, as indicated by the identification of taxa with warm, oligotrophic water affinity.

A dynamic ocean driven by changes in CO2 and Antarctic ice-sheet in the middle Miocene

Amanda Frigola et al.

Summary: The middle Miocene climate transition involved major expansion of the Antarctic ice-sheet and cooling of the global ocean. Simulations showed that the decrease in global sea-surface temperature was mainly due to the CO2 drop, while the expansion of the Antarctic ice-sheet tended to cause a slight global warming of the upper ocean. The study suggests that the combined effects of CO2 decrease and Antarctic ice-sheet expansion explain the cooling of deep waters across the MMCT.

Distinct petroacoustic signature in heterozoan and photozoan carbonates resulting from combined depositional and diagenetic processes

C. Matonti et al.

Summary: The acoustic properties of heterozoan and photozoan carbonates were compared and interpreted based on a multidisciplinary and multi-scale study of Oligo-Miocene limestone outcrops. Heterozoan carbonates exhibited significant development of microporosity and pressure-solution compaction features, while photozoan carbonates were dominated by moldic, vuggy, and partially cemented intergranular pores which increased the pore network stiffness.

Middle Miocene tropical oligotrophic lagoon deposit sheds light on the origin of the Western Australian coral reef province

Rosine Riera et al.

Summary: The Western Australian margin is a unique coral reef province with modern coral reef development occurring at latitudes as far south as 29 degrees S. The genesis of this coral reef province may go back to the Oligo-Miocene, with seismic reefs being only sparsely sampled and present in a few remote locations. The study investigates middle Miocene shallow-water limestones with tropical fauna formed along the North West Shelf, showing warm climate during this time despite being located further south than its present position.
