Rock coast erosion: An overlooked source of sediments to the ocean. Europe as an example

V. Regard et al.

Summary: Current assessments assume that rivers provide most of the sediment flux to the ocean, with glacially-derived sediments and airborne dust making up the remaining portion. However, this study shows that the contribution from rock coasts has been greatly underestimated, with sediment supply from cliffs being three times less than river discharge in Europe.

Geology of the Johan Sverdrup field: A giant oil discovery and development project in a mature Norwegian North Sea basin

Signe Ottesen et al.

Summary: The article introduces the discovery of the giant Johan Sverdrup oil field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. After 50 years of exploration, the significant discoveries were made in 2007 and 2010. The oil field is mainly composed of the Statfjord and Viking groups, with a stratigraphic succession from Upper Triassic-Lower Jurassic to Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous. It has excellent reservoir properties and permeabilities. This oil field will be a major energy supplier in the coming decades.

Structural controls on bedrock weathering in crystalline basement terranes and its implications on groundwater resources

Rudra Mohan Pradhan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bedrock weathering and groundwater storage in crystalline basement rock terrains by integrating high-resolution subsurface resistivity images with important geological structures. The results show that the presence of foliations, fractures, and faults influence the depth of the weathered zone and groundwater storage. Additionally, the study examines the impact of paleostress and different tectonic structures on the depth of the Critical Zone, highlighting the global applicability of the approach presented in mapping bedrock weathering and groundwater resources.

Sediment provenance of a carbonate bioclastic pocket beach d Le Dune (Ionian Sea, South Italy)

Isabella Lapietra et al.

Summary: This study focuses on analyzing a carbonate bioclastic pocket beach to understand the correlation between beach dynamics and sediment provenance. The study reveals that the bioclast component is a key indicator of beach dynamics and provides important information about sand origin and sediment transport.

Coastal sandy spit deposits (Lower Burdigalian/Eggenburgian) in the Alpine-Carpathian Foredeep of Lower Austria

Slavomir Nehyba et al.

Summary: This study focused on the sands with large clinoforms in the Lower Burdigalian stage in the Eggenburg region, Lower Austria. The stratigraphic and facies architecture, paleocurrent pattern, and inferred paleogeographic setting indicate that these sands are deposits of coastal spit systems, attached to crystalline shoals or islets in the shallow marine Eggenburg Bay, with high mineralogical maturity and evidence of intense reworking and redeposition of material from older deposits. The provenance analysis reveals the local Moravian and Moldanubian crystalline rocks as principal sources.

Mapping of Sicilian Pocket Beaches Land Use/Land Cover with Sentinel-2 Imagery: A Case Study of Messina Province

Giovanni Randazzo et al.

Summary: This study focused on investigating supervised classification methods for mapping land use/land cover of PBs in the province of Messina. The results demonstrate that biophysical parameters of the coastal area can be obtained through conducting LULC mapping on Sentinel-2 images.
