Trapped in a graben: deposition of Huronian gold-bearing conglomerates in a fault-influenced, valley-confined, fluvial system in the southern Cobalt Basin, Ontario, Canada

D. G. F. Long et al.

Summary: Isopachs of Huronian strata in the Cobalt Basin reveal a 4 km wide valley system that influenced the distribution of gold-bearing gravel-bed rivers. Valleys were formed parallel to existing north-south-oriented faults, while subsidence associated with east-south-east-oriented faults affected thickness distributions. Erosion removed underlying formations in the north and thickened/thinned them in the south due to trans-tensional influences.

Using computed tomography (CT) to reconstruct depositional processes and products in the subaqueous glaciogenic Champlain Sea basin, Ottawa, Canada

Omar N. Al-Mufti et al.

Summary: This study used computed tomography (CT) to infer the depositional conditions in the glaciogenic Champlain Sea basin. By analyzing CT-scan images and Hounsfield unit (HU) profiles, five lithologically distinct, mud-dominated stratal units were identified. All strata showed a repeating pattern of HU values. The changes in HU values within each bed indicated the variations in silt content, reflecting the waxing and waning flow conditions during a glaciogenic meltwater discharge cycle. The range of HU values and sedimentary structures suggested different sediment transport processes and changes in water composition.

Morphodynamic evolution of paraglacial spit complexes on a tide-influenced Arctic fjord delta (Dicksonfjorden, Svalbard)

Dohyeong Kim et al.

Summary: Recent global warming has caused pronounced geomorphic changes along the Arctic coastlines, such as coastal retreat and delta progradation. This study conducted a repeat survey using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to investigate the annual morphodynamics of gravel spit complexes in the deglaciated Dicksonfjorden, Svalbard. The study found that the spit morphodynamics vary over time and space, with an overall increase in growth and migration rate downfjord. The primary driver of spit morphodynamics is longshore drift, supplemented by overwash processes.

The impact of vegetation on meandering rivers

Alessandro Ielpi et al.

Summary: This review explores the relationships between the evolution of land plants, meandering-river dynamics, and global biogeochemical fluxes. It discusses the impacts of anthropogenic stressors such as climate change, reduced biodiversity, and aridification on modern meandering rivers and their biogeochemical fluxes. The review proposes a framework that describes the stability and dynamics of meandering rivers in the presence and absence of land plants, emphasizing the role of plant evolution in providing settings suitable for stable meandering systems.

Distinguishing mid-channel and bank-attached fluvial bars by flow divergence: Implications for the interpretation of stratigraphic records

Massimiliano Ghinassi et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of analyzing the angle of flow divergence in distinguishing mid-channel and bank-attached fluvial bars, providing crucial information for predicting sedimentary facies distribution and interpreting river morphodynamics. The data suggest that a comprehensive approach based on paleocurrent and architectural information from various portions of preserved bar bodies is necessary for reliable distinction between different types of bars.

Evidence for a Highly Dynamic West Antarctic Ice Sheet During the Pliocene

Karsten Gohl et al.

Summary: The major ice loss in the Amundsen Sea sector of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is believed to have caused ice sheet collapses in warm periods like the Pliocene. Expedition 379 recovered sediments from late Miocene to Holocene, providing insights into sedimentation processes in response to climate changes. Analysis of seismic data revealed significant prograding sequences and prolonged ice-sheet retreat during a warm period in the mid-Pliocene, suggesting a highly dynamic West Antarctic Ice Sheet during the Pliocene.

Rock fracturing by subglacial hydraulic jacking in basement rocks, eastern Sweden: the role of beam failure

Maarten Krabbendam et al.

Summary: Research in eastern Sweden has revealed locally dense networks of dilated fractures in basement gneisses, likely formed during the latest glaciation. Re-analysis suggests the formation of new fractures in addition to the reactivation of existing ones, with beam failure theory from structural engineering providing a plausible explanation for the generation of new vertical fractures.
