Role of nitrite reductase in N2O production under aerobic conditions: An index for predicting the intensity of N2O production

Rui Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Nir activity can be used as an indicator for characterizing changes in N2O emissions. The N2O emission and its proportion were least at an aeration intensity of 0.8 L.min(-1), while Nir activity was relatively high at an aeration intensity of 0.6 L.min(-1). Additionally, Nir activity showed a high affinity for nitrite and was not directly affected by DO.

Heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification process: Promising but a long way to go in the wastewater treatment

Haipeng Xi et al.

Summary: Traditional biological nitrogen removal (BNR) involves sequential nitrification and denitrification, but in recent years, novel processes like anaerobic ammonia oxidation and comammox have gained attention. Among them, heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) is particularly promising for one-stage nitrogen removal in the presence of organic carbon under aerobic conditions. This review focuses on the diversity, physiology, performance, challenges, and strategies of HN-AD bacteria.

Summary: In this study, a strain of Rhodococcus erythropolis Y10 capable of aerobic denitrification was screened from surface flow constructed wetlands. The strain removed ammonium through heterotrophic ammonium assimilation and exhibited improved aerobic denitrification efficiency when ammonium was added. The findings shed light on the role of ammonium assimilation in microbial ammonium removal.

Bioaugmentation with Acinetobacter sp. TAC-1 to enhance nitrogen removal in swine wastewater by moving bed biofilm reactor inoculated with bacteria

Xue Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, bioaugmentation with Acinetobacter sp. TAC-1 was employed to enhance the treatment performance of a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) inoculated with heterotrophic nitrification aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacteria. The results showed that the removal rates of NH4+-N and TN in the bioaugmented reactor were significantly improved. The efficient removal performance for real swine wastewater was achieved within 24 hours. Microbial analysis revealed changes in the composition of functional bacteria and an increase in the abundance of enzymes and functional genes related to denitrification.

Novel Alcaligenes ammonioxydans sp. nov. from wastewater treatment sludge oxidizes ammonia to N-2 with a previously unknown pathway

Meng-Ru Wu et al.

Summary: Heterotrophic nitrifier strain HO-1 was identified as a novel bacterium capable of oxidizing ammonia to hydroxylamine and ultimately producing N-2 gas. Genome analysis revealed a unique denitrification pathway and the absence of genes for known ammonia monooxygenases or hydroxylamine oxidoreductases. Further experiments showed that strain HO-1 denitrified nitrite to N-2 and N2O under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, indicating a novel direct ammonia oxidation pathway named Dirammox.

Incorporation of the complete ammonia oxidation (comammox) process for modeling nitrification in suspended growth wastewater treatment systems

Mohamad-Javad Mehrani et al.

Summary: The newly discovered process of comammox has brought changes to the traditional understanding of nitrification. Through long-term experiments, it was found that comammox may be responsible for converting over 20% of the influent ammonia load, and predictions based on the conventional approach were slightly better than other methods. Further investigation is needed to fully understand the role of comammox in nitrogen mass balance in activated sludge systems.

Summary: Traditional nitrogen removal methods rely on autotrophic nitrification and anaerobic denitrification, but heterotrophic nitrification & aerobic denitrification microorganisms (HNADMs) have the potential to simultaneously achieve nitrification, denitrification, and even phosphorus removal. This suggests that HNADMs could be a valuable tool for wastewater pollution removal.
