Organic and Inorganic Amendments Shape Bacterial Indicator Communities That Can, In Turn, Promote Rice Yield

Chongwen Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different fertilization methods on soil microbial communities, functional compositions, and rice yield. The results showed that the combined application of chemical fertilizers and organic residues resulted in the highest rice yield. Specific bacterial indicator taxa were found to play important roles in soil enzyme activities and nutrient cycling, which directly and/or indirectly determined the rice yield. This study demonstrated the importance of bacterial indicator communities in sustainable agricultural systems.

Ammonia removal through combined methane oxidation and nitrification-denitrification and the interactions among functional microorganisms

Qin Cao et al.

Summary: The study explored the utilization of methane produced by anaerobic digestion as a carbon source for nitrogenous contaminant removal in wastewater treatment. The results indicated that coupling methane oxidation with nitrate/nitrite denitrification was beneficial in achieving higher ammonia removal rates. Analysis of microbial communities revealed the presence of methanotrophs and heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria in the system.

Rhizosphere assisted bioengineering approaches for the mitigation of petroleum hydrocarbons contamination in soil

L. Paikhomba Singha et al.

Summary: The high demand for petroleum oil has caused hydrocarbon contamination in soil globally. Physical and chemical treatments are effective for removal, but cost-effectiveness is a concern. Biodegradation by bacteria and rhizoremediation with plant-microbe interactions offer alternatives with promising prospects.

The Influence of Above-Ground Herbivory on the Response of Arctic Soil Methanotrophs to Increasing CH4 Concentrations and Temperatures

Edda M. Rainer et al.

Summary: The study found that elevated CH4 concentrations led to increased CH4 oxidation rates in peat soils exposed to herbivory and protected by exclosures, with the strongest response observed in grazed peat soils. The relative transcriptional activities of different methanotroph community members were affected by the CH4 concentrations, with transcriptional responses to low CH4 concentrations more prevalent in grazed peat soils and responses to high CH4 concentrations more prevalent in exclosed peat soils. These findings suggest that methanotroph communities in these peat soils respond to changes in CH4 concentration based on their previous exposure to grazing.

Effects of Soil Moisture and Temperature on Microbial Regulation of Methane Fluxes in a Poplar Plantation

Huili Feng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of soil moisture and temperature shifts on soil methane (CH4) fluxes in forest ecosystems, particularly in the Huai River Basin in China. The results showed that changes in soil moisture and temperature significantly affected CH4 fluxes, as well as the relative abundance and diversity of methanotrophs in the soil. Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of soil hydrology in triggering CH4 efflux from subtropical plantation forest soils under future climate change.

Katie Sipes et al.

Summary: Permafrost microbes in ancient soil exhibit unique adaptations to extreme environments, with genomic data showing differences from nonpermafrost counterparts. These microbes possess genes for membrane stabilization, osmotic stress responses, and energy production, indicating strategies for long-term survival in frozen conditions.

Ingeborg Bussmann et al.

Summary: Three strains of methanotrophic bacteria were isolated from the River Elbe in Germany, including two novel species within the genus Methylomonas and one member of the species Methylovulum psychrotolerans. These bacteria exhibit differences in carbon source utilization and growth conditions, highlighting the importance of identifying and classifying new species in this study.
