Organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls from a greenhouse area on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey: Distribution, air-soil exchange, enantiomeric signature, and source implications

Emine Can-Guven et al.

Summary: The study investigated levels, seasonal variation, and air-soil exchange of 22 organochlorine pesticides and 15 polychlorinated biphenyls in an agricultural area of Turkey, also providing insights into the enantiomeric signatures of chiral OCPs. The results showed lower or similar contamination levels compared to global studies in agricultural regions, with DDT and its metabolites, as well as endosulfan isomers, being the most prevalent chemicals. The enantiomer fractions of o,p'-DDT in air samples suggest re-volatilization of equally depleted enantiomers or fresh input of racemic o,p'-DDT to the air, with net deposition being the dominant mechanism.

Spatial variability in the ambient concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans across the Middle East

Summary: The study monitored the concentrations of PCDD/F in the Middle East using passive air samplers at 12 sites across four countries. The highest concentrations were found in Oman and Kuwait, with a potential additional source involving the use of elemental chlorine. The study provides reliable measurements for assessing time trends in PCDD/F in the air.

Selected Persistent Organic Pollutants in Ambient Air in Turkey: Regional Sources and Controlling Factors

Elif Gungormus et al.

Summary: Turkey's unique location allows it to receive air masses from Europe, Russia, Middle East, and Africa, making it a significant site for long-range atmospheric transport (LRT) of contaminants. Measurements in Istanbul and Izmir showed high levels of organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, and PBDEs, with DDT and HCH derivatives being dominant species. Temperature dependence indicates contributions from both LRT and local contaminated areas to elevated pollutant levels, with potential source regions identified in Africa, Middle East, Europe, and local metropolitan areas.

Summary: The study examines the comparability of data collected from different PUF-PAS designs and the impact of analysis in different laboratories on the results. Results indicate that variability introduced by analysis in different laboratories far exceeds differences due to sampler design, highlighting the need for intercalibration exercises to ensure analytical comparability between laboratories.
