Occurrence, spatial distribution, and potential risks of organic micropollutants in urban surface waters from qinghai, northwest China

Jiangtao Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the residues, distribution, and risks of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in surface waters of major cities in Qinghai, China. The results showed that OPEs were the dominant composition, and diazinon and dursban posed moderate-high chronic ecological risk to aquatic organisms. Although the non-carcinogenic total hazard quotient of OMPs in surface water was low, the potential risks to children and infants should not be underestimated.

Wenkai An et al.

Summary: PhACs have potential ecological and healthy risks and have attracted researchers' attention. The study in Wujin analyzed the occurrence, distribution, sources, riverine flux, and risk assessment of 32 target PhACs. Closure of fishponds and livestock farms led to improved water quality, with CF, SMX, and EM identified as high-risk contaminants.

Human activities induce potential aquatic threats of micropollutants in Danjiangkou Reservoir, the largest artificial freshwater lake in Asia

Miao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of multiple micropollutants and other stressors on the ecosystem of the Danjiangkou Reservoir in central China. The results showed a widespread contamination of micropollutants in the reservoir, with the tributaries being the most severely affected. Pesticides and organophosphate esters were identified as the major contributors to ecological risk. Environmental variables and human activities were found to be potential threats to the aquatic ecosystem.

A QSAR-ICE-SSD model prediction of the PNECs for alkylphenol substances and application in ecological risk assessment for rivers of a megacity

Yajun Hong et al.

Summary: This study focuses on developing computational models to predict the aquatic toxicity of alkylphenols (APs) with incomplete/unknown toxicity data in aquatic environments. A QSAR-ICE-SSD model was constructed for aquatic organisms, combining quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), interspecies correlation estimation (ICE), and species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models to obtain the hazardous concentrations (HCs) of selected APs.

Occurrence of caffeine, fluoxetine, bezafibrate and levothyroxine in surface freshwater of Sao Paulo State (Brazil) and risk assessment for aquatic life protection

Raquel Cardoso de Souza et al.

Summary: The study found that bezafibrate and caffeine had risk quotient values below 1 in all sampling sites in Brazilian surface freshwaters, indicating a low potential risk. However, fluoxetine had risk quotient values above 1 in all samples, suggesting a potential risk to freshwater pelagic biota. Additional studies are needed to determine if fluoxetine is a nationwide pollutant in Brazil.

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in bottled water and assessment of the associated risks

Chengfei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of 187 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in bottled water samples, with 44 compounds belonging to 14 PPCP categories detected. The thermal stabilities of the PPCPs were determined, revealing that only 35 out of the 187 compounds were degraded significantly after boiling for 5 minutes. Despite low risk levels overall, certain PPCPs showed higher risk levels in infants compared to other life stages, highlighting the need for further research on the toxicity of PPCP mixtures and their effects on human intestinal microbiota.

Pharmaceuticals and other urban contaminants threaten Amazonian freshwater ecosystems

Andreu Rico et al.

Summary: The rapid urbanization in the Brazilian Amazon has led to untreated wastewater containing pharmaceuticals and other chemicals being discharged into freshwater ecosystems, posing potential risks to biodiversity. Urban areas are identified as hotspots for chemical contamination, with mixtures containing numerous compounds and some reaching global maxima in exposure concentrations. Chemical pollution may have long-term effects on 50-80% of aquatic species near urban areas.

Xiangping Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, various drugs were detected in water bodies near medical institutions, with some posing potential risks to aquatic organisms, highlighting the need for further attention. While the pandemic did not cause serious pollution, effective measures are required to address the increased use of drugs and potential ecological risks.

Jianfeng Tang et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical pollution in aquatic ecosystems, influenced by human activities, was investigated in two watersheds in Eastern China. The study found higher pharmaceutical concentrations in urban watershed compared to peri-urban watershed, with variations between dry season and wet season. Urban and agricultural activities were identified as main factors contributing to pharmaceutical pollution.

Screening and ecological risk of 1200 organic micropollutants in Yangtze Estuary water

Xuehua Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated levels and risks of various organic micropollutants in the Yangtze Estuary, finding that the majority of OMPs had a risk quotient of less than 0.1. However, some OMPs had higher risk quotients, with joint probabilistic risks assessed through species sensitivity distribution models. The results serve as a benchmark for future efforts to protect biodiversity in the Yangtze Estuary.
