Nitin Chandra Teja Dadi et al.

Summary: Endophytic fungi, particularly those from Thai mangrove forests, have been identified as potential sources for inhibitors of Vibrio growth. One specific fungus (MCR433) showed significant protection against AHPND in shrimp feeding trials, indicating its potential as a feed additive alternative to antibiotics. Strain wars and the evolution of opportunistic pathogens

Samuel K. Sheppard

Summary: This article synthesizes existing literature to address the perplexity of why some pathogens maintain virulence genes in the population. It is described that some pathogenic species can benefit in one niche while adapting to another, and this paradigm is extended to include genetic diversity and competition among individual strains. Furthermore, it presents a scenario where commensal organisms can be primed for invasive disease in fluctuating immune environments with complex micro-niche structure.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of carbapenem resistance genes in Acinetobacter spp. isolated from wastewater in a municipal WWTP and to determine their spread from treated wastewater to river water. The research found evidence that WWTP is a potential source of pollution, leading to the spread of alarming beta-lactam resistance genes in the natural environment, posing a serious epidemiological threat.

Occurrence and distribution of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in the guts of shrimp from different coastal areas of China

Wei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in the guts of shrimp from 12 coastal regions of China. The results showed that various antibiotics and ARGs were widely present in the shrimp guts, and the relative abundance of ARGs and MGEs were positively correlated. Moreover, it was found that antibiotic use could induce the production and spread of ARGs. Strict regulation of antibiotic use is necessary to reduce potential risks to shrimp and human health.

Growth performance, digestive and immune enzyme activities, and the environmental effects of the ivory shell, Babylonia areolata (Link 1807) in integrated Multi-Trophic aquaculture systems

Wang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system on the growth performance and digestive and immune enzyme activities of the ivory shell. The results showed that the IMTA ponds had higher survival rate, farming yield, and feed efficiency. The presence of seaweed and sea cucumber in the IMTA system also improved water and sediment quality. Furthermore, the IMTA system enhanced the digestive and immune abilities of the ivory shell, leading to healthier growth.

Effects of heavy metals pollution on the co-selection of metal and antibiotic resistance in urban rivers in UK and India*

Sonia Gupta et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between heavy metal pollution and antibiotic resistance in river systems. The results indicate that high metal concentrations promote the abundance of metal and antibiotic resistance genes and affect bacterial communities, leading to the development of multi-metal and multi-antibiotic resistance. Network analysis demonstrates the positive relationships between metal resistance genes and antibiotic resistance genes, as well as the potential role of integrons in the co transmission of these genes. The findings highlight the need to consider metal pollution in controlling antibiotic resistance transmission.

Distribution of typical antibiotic resistance genes in underlying surface sediments from urban commercial public squares and their potential hosts

XiaoJun Zuo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in sediments from commercial public squares around Nanjing, China. The results showed that intracellular ARGs were the dominant components, different from extracellular ARGs. The influence of street sweeping on ARGs levels varied among different sites. The correlation between ARGs and dominant bacterial communities suggested a positive relationship with Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. Solar UV disinfection was found to slightly inactivate antibiotic resistance bacteria.

Summary: The global prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) poses a serious threat to ecological security and human health, as agricultural practices introduce substantial selective agents like antibiotics to the environment. Research showed that using a hyperaccumulator plant and biochar amendment can help mitigate the prevalence of ARGs in soil, with a structural equation model indicating that mobile genetic elements play a dominant role in shaping the profile of ARGs.
