Tracing microplastics from raw water to drinking water treatment plants in Busan, South Korea

Jae-Won Jung et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence and removal efficiency of microplastics (MPs) in Korean drinking water treatment plants. The results showed that the number of MPs was higher in river sites compared to reservoir sites, with minimal differences during June to October. The main types of MPs found in raw water were polyethylene (PE)/polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).

Microplastics throughout a tap water supply network

Joan Dalmau-Soler et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the presence of microplastics in drinking water from a large distribution water supply network and found that 38% of samples contained microplastics, mainly consisting of polypropylene, polyester, and polyamide. Results indicate that the pipes and the supply network do not release microplastics into the drinking water.

Risk assessment of microplastic particles

Albert A. Koelmans et al.

Summary: This Review examines the properties of microplastic particles and discusses methods of assessing the risks they pose to humans and the environment. Microplastic particles are widespread in the environment and can be found in the air we breathe and the food we eat. The lack of a risk assessment framework that considers the multidimensionality of microplastic particles compared to natural particles is a key challenge. This article reviews current understanding of microplastic characteristics and effects and proposes a method for quantifying exposure and effect thresholds using probability density functions.

Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

Investigation of microplastics release behavior from ozone-exposed plastic pipe materials

Xinyue Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the release behavior of microplastics (MPs) from plastic pipe materials exposed to ozone. The results show that different types of plastic materials have varying release behavior, with an increase in release as the duration of ozone exposure increases. LDPE, HDPE, and PP release the most MPs, while PVC releases the least. The presence of ozone also affects the physicochemical properties of the plastic materials. The study concludes that the release of MPs from aged plastic pipe materials cannot be ignored, as it contributes significantly to the increase in MPs abundance.

Coverage of microplastic data underreporting and progress toward standardization

Fermin Perez-Guevara et al.

Summary: The analysis of microplastics in different environments is increasing worldwide, but their data are often underreported due to various reasons. Smaller-sized microplastic particles, which are known to be more harmful, are often not included in the reported data. Improving methodologies and promoting standardization are crucial for enhancing microplastic data.

V. C. Shruti et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and characteristics of microplastics in drinking water from refill kiosks in Mexico City. The results showed that microplastics were present in all samples, primarily as fibrous microplastics. The study highlights the need for urban water management to improve the safety of water from refill kiosks to prevent microplastic pollution.

Occurrence of microplastic particles in the most popular Iranian bottled mineral water brands and an assessment of human exposure

Pouran Makhdoumi et al.

Summary: Microplastics have been detected in popular brands of bottled mineral water in Iran, with fragment and fiber shapes being the most common. The average concentration of MP particles was approximately 8.5 particles/L. While most samples contained MPs, 20% did not. Human exposure to microplastics through bottled mineral water was found to be negligible, with daily and annual intake levels well below established safety thresholds.

Drinking plastics? - Quantification and qualification of microplastics in drinking water distribution systems by mu FTIR and Py-GCMS

Inga V. Kirstein et al.

Summary: The concentrations of microplastics in potable water are debated, likely due to variations in water quality, quantification methods, and analytical standards. Reliable methods for assessing microplastics in drinking water are lacking, but proper assessment requires quality assurance, adequate volume assessment, and understanding of analytical method differences. The study used validated techniques to assess microplastics in drinking water distribution systems and found low contents, suggesting low risk to human health.

A systematic protocol of microplastics analysis from their identification to quantification in water environment: A comprehensive review

Jieun Lee et al.

Summary: Microplastics pose risks to ecosystems and human health, yet a systematic protocol for qualitative and quantitative analysis is still lacking in environmental analytical chemistry. These microplastics are spread through the food web to living organisms, and have even been detected in bottled water. Establishing a systematic protocol for microplastic identification is crucial to ensure accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility in determining their eco-toxicity and removal by biodegradation.

Understanding the fate of nano-plastics in wastewater treatment plants and their removal using membrane processes

Anika Amir Mohana et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics have become a significant environmental concern due to their adverse effects on water environments. Wastewater treatment plants are identified as major sources of nanoparticle generation, primarily through the mechanism of cracking larger plastic debris. Current membrane processes are ineffective for nanoparticle removal, leading to the need for developing a bio-nanofiltration process as an alternative method. This process can produce nanoparticle-free water for safe discharge.
