Comprehensive evaluation of the carbon footprint components of wastewater treatment plants located in the Baltic Sea region

Mojtaba Maktabifard et al.

Summary: This study proposed a functional unit (FU) for a comprehensive comparison of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in terms of their carbon footprint (CF). Direct emissions had the highest contribution to total CF, while energy consumption dominated the total indirect emissions in both countries. Polish WWTPs benefitted more from energy self-sufficiency than Finnish plants due to higher electricity emission factors in Poland.

The impact of a seasonal change in loading rate on the nitrous oxide emissions at the WWTP of a tourist region

Daniel F. C. Dias et al.

Summary: This study examined seasonal changes in N2O emissions at an activated sludge WWTP in a tourist region, finding higher N2O emissions in the low season despite lower loading rates, contradicting literature suggestions. Operational changes at WWTP were found to have a significant impact on N2O emissions, with aeration rate showing a strong correlation. The study suggests that the hydroxylamine oxidation pathway may play a more significant role in N2O production than nitrifier denitrification.

Environmental performance of dewatered sewage sludge digestate utilization based on life cycle assessment

Jouni Havukainen et al.

Summary: With the trend of urbanization, the importance of sewage and sludge treatment is increasing. The method of treatment and utilization of digestate has a significant impact on environmental performance, with combustion and composting showing more advantages over pyrolysis. However, further development and assessment are needed for the pyrolysis technology.

Environmental Performance in the Production and Use of Recovered Fertilizers from Organic Wastes Treated by Anaerobic Digestion vs Synthetic Mineral Fertilizers

Axel Herrera et al.

Summary: Recovered fertilizers produced from organic wastes by thermophilic anaerobic digestion were found to have better environmental performances compared to synthetic mineral fertilizers. A life cycle assessment approach showed that the use of recovered fertilizers resulted in lower environmental impacts in various categories, with some categories even showing net negative impacts due to the credit for renewable energy production.

Life cycle cost analysis of wastewater treatment: A systematic review of literature

Muhammad Ilyas et al.

Summary: The literature on life cycle costing of wastewater treatment has increased substantially in the past two decades, with a gradual shift towards environmental and societal life cycle costing. However, there is still a lack of detailed systematic review on methods and approaches in this field. Most studies focus on affordability and comparative analysis, with a suggestion for future research to develop a comprehensive framework considering all costs associated with wastewater treatment.
