Alleviation of drought stress by root-applied thiourea is related to elevated photosynthetic pigments, osmoprotectants, antioxidant enzymes, and tubers yield and suppressed oxidative stress in potatoes cultivars

Muhammad Hamzah Saleem et al.

Summary: The growth and productivity of plants can be improved by using thiourea (TU) under stressful conditions. This study found that TU can mitigate the detrimental effects of drought stress on potato plants, increasing yield and chlorophyll pigments while reducing oxidative stress and enhancing enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants.

Characteristics of microplastic pollution and analysis of colonized-microbiota in a freshwater aquaculture system

Weixin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial communities associated with microplastics (MPs) pollution in grass carp farm ponds and found significant differences in bacterial structures, functions, and complexity between microbiota on MPs and in water. The enriched or depleted microbial species on MPs belonged to the phylum Proteobacteria, some of which have cellulose-degrading and pathogenic characteristics. Microbiota on MPs exhibited higher species richness, diversity, and a more complex network structure.

Summary: The interaction between microplastic/nanoplastic and other environmental contaminants can lead to the accumulation and increased toxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles. This study found that nanoparticles exacerbated oxidative stress and emphasized the importance of monitoring the discharge of these pollutants.

Microfiber releasing into urban rivers from face masks during COVID-19

Feifei Wang et al.

Summary: Improper disposal of face masks contributes to microplastic contamination. Discarded face masks can release microfibers into aquatic environments, potentially becoming new sources of microplastic pollution. These masks also contain potentially toxic elements. These findings highlight the importance of proper disposal to prevent both microplastic pollution and the spread of COVID-19.

Replacement of fish meal by black soldier fly larvae meal in diet for goldfish Carassius auratus: Growth performance, hematology, histology, total carotenoids, and coloration

Anurak Khieokhajonkhet et al.

Summary: Black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) shows promise as a sustainable and high-protein animal feed ingredient in aquaculture. This study investigated the potential application of BSFLM in goldfish culture. The results showed that dietary inclusion of BSFLM improved growth performance, feed utilization, and blood biochemistries in goldfish, but had negative effects on carotenoid content, skin coloration, and liver histological integrity.

Summary: This study investigated the quality and quantity of microplastic contaminants in water and soil samples at Veeranam lake in Tamil Nadu, India, revealing a variety of microplastic particles such as nylon and polyethylene. The distribution of different types of plastic particles in water and sediment samples was also examined, with nylon, polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, and PVC being the most prominent polymers found.

Effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) after individual and combined exposure with zinc oxide nanoparticles

Fernanda Neves Estrela et al.

Summary: The study found that short-term exposure to PS NPs affected fish's response to mirror tests, as well as induced inactivity towards alarm substances and DNA damage. Increased oxidative stress was observed, and while antioxidant levels were elevated, they were not sufficient to counteract the effects of free radicals produced by the treatment.

Effect of Fish Bone Bioactive Peptides on Oxidative, Inflammatory and Pigmentation Processes Triggered by UVB Irradiation in Skin Cells

Andreea Iosageanu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the photoprotective effect of fish bone bioactive peptides (FBBP) isolated from silver carp discarded tissue on skin cells exposed to UVB irradiation and stressing agents. These peptides show cytoprotective activity, reduce ROS production, inhibit lipid peroxidation, decrease proinflammatory cytokines secretion, and lower melanin production and tyrosinase activity in a dose-dependent manner. The results suggest the potential use of FBBP as valuable natural ingredients in photoprotective cosmeceutical products.

Microplastics intake and excretion: Resilience of the intestinal microbiota but residual growth inhibition in common carp

Ming-Yan Ouyang et al.

Summary: The study showed that exposure to microplastics did not impact fish growth, but had a delayed effect following their excretion. While intake and excretion of microplastics did not affect isotopic and elemental compositions, it altered the composition of intestinal microbiota. Interestingly, after excretion, the bacterial community structure of fish treated with microplastics showed resilience and grouped together with the control.
