Jasmonic acid alleviates cadmium toxicity through regulating the antioxidant response and enhancing the chelation of cadmium in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Yan Li et al.

Summary: Jasmonic acid (JA) can reduce the content of cadmium (Cd) in rice roots and shoots by promoting the combination of Cd on soluble pectin and inhibiting Cd movement into protoplasts. Additionally, JA application can help alleviate lipid peroxidation damage induced by Cd by reducing H2O2 content. Field experiments also showed that foliar spraying of JA can inhibit the transport of Cd from the stalk and root to the grain in rice.

Cadmium stress in plants: A critical review of the effects, mechanisms, and tolerance strategies

Taoufik El Rasafi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the deleterious effects of cadmium in plants and the evolution of tolerance and resistance mechanisms. Cadmium negatively affects seed germination, early seedling growth, and plant biomass, as well as photosynthesis, water content, transpiration rate, and electrolyte leakage. Plants have developed detoxification mechanisms to exclude or accumulate cadmium, and utilize signaling pathways, hormone synthesis, antioxidant systems, and other strategies to adapt to cadmium toxicity. Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in reducing metal phytoavailability and enhancing plant morphological and physiological parameters for cadmium tolerance.

Jenny S. Paul et al.

Summary: This study assessed the chronic impacts of cadmium on channel catfish, finding that cadmium exposure negatively impacted growth, linked to tissue Cd accumulation with dose-related response, showing significant differences in Cd concentrations in different tissues. Additionally, cadmium exposure affected other element concentrations and led to changes in gene expression levels.

Hui Zeng et al.

Summary: Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), especially transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC), have advantageous properties and applications in various fields. This study compared the effects of natural nanocolloids and humic acid on the environmental transformation and ecotoxicity of single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SLMoS2). The presence of natural nanocolloids significantly impacted the dispersion and biological risks of TMDC in aquatic environments, highlighting the need for further research in this area.

High cadmium pollution from sediments in a eutrophic lake caused by dissolved organic matter complexation and reduction of manganese oxide

Musong Chen et al.

Summary: Eutrophication and metal pollution are global environmental issues. This study investigated the mobility of cadmium in sediments from Lake Taihu and found that the sudden outbreak of cadmium pollution in May and June was due to the complexation of dissolved organic matter with cadmium in sediments. The research highlights the risk of sudden cadmium pollution events in eutrophic lakes.

Impact of algal extracellular polymeric substances on the environmental fate and risk of molybdenum disulfide in aqueous media

Wei Zou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the interaction between freshwater algae extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and MoS2 significantly altered the properties and toxicity of MoS2 to aquatic fish, affecting its morphology, structure, and dissolution rate. The binding of aromatic compounds, polysaccharides, and carboxyl-rich proteins in EPS on MoS2 and electron charge transfer with EPS decreased MoS2's catalytic activity and toxicity to infantile zebrafish.

Water dispersible colloids and related nutrient availability in Amazonian Terra Preta soils

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: Amazonian Dark Earths, or Terra Preta, are highly fertile soils containing water-dispersible colloids with significant organo-mineral associations contributing to their fertility. The larger-sized colloids in Terra Preta soils, enriched with nutrients like phosphorus, are believed to be formed with the involvement of soil organic matter, influenced by higher pH values and calcium ion concentrations. Preventing soil acidification is crucial for maintaining colloidal structures and fertility in Terra Preta soils.
