Biodegradation of phthalate esters by Pantoea dispersa BJQ0007 isolated from Baijiu

Youqiang Xu et al.

Summary: The bacterium Pantoea dispersa BJQ0007 isolated from Baijiu fermentation starter can degrade various phthalate esters, with di-(2ethylhexyl) phthalate as the preferred substrate. Its genome was sequenced, revealing an uncommon metabolic step in the degradation pathway. Two enzymes responsible for ester bond hydrolysis of phthalate esters were identified, offering potential for safety control of Baijiu products.

Eco-physiological portrait of a novel Pseudomonas sp. CSV86: an ideal host/candidate for metabolic engineering and bioremediation

Prashant S. Phale et al.

Summary: Pseudomonas sp. CSV86, an Indian soil isolate, possesses the unique property of preferentially degrading aromatic compounds over glucose, which is attributed to the absence of the low-affinity oxidative route for glucose metabolism. The strain has a large genome enriched with regulators, transporters, and secondary metabolite production clusters, indicating its ecological and metabolic versatility. Additionally, CSV86 harbors various integrative conjugative elements and genomic islands, possibly acquired through horizontal gene transfer events, leading to genome mosaicity and plasticity.

A keystone gene underlies the persistence of an experimental food web

Matthew A. Barbour et al.

Summary: This study reveals that genes of one species can affect the persistence of interacting species in an ecological community. The experiment shows that plant defense genes can promote coexistence by increasing plant growth rate, leading to higher intrinsic growth rates of species across multiple trophic levels.

Whole-genome sequencing, genome mining, metabolic reconstruction and evolution of pentachlorophenol and other xenobiotic degradation pathways in Bacillus tropicus strain AOA-CPS1

Oladipupo A. Aregbesola et al.

Summary: The pentachlorophenol degrading bacterium BtAOA was isolated from effluent of a wastewater treatment plant in Durban, South Africa. The whole-genome sequencing and metabolic reconstruction revealed that enzymes involved in the PCP degradation pathway of BtAOA were acquired through horizontal gene transfer and from pre-existing enzymes in related subsystems.

Genome mining reveals the genes of carboxypeptidase for OTA-detoxification in Bacillus subtilis CW14

Xinge Xu et al.

Summary: Bacillus subtilis CW14, isolated from fresh elk droppings in Beijing Zoo, is a GRAS bacterium capable of detoxifying ochratoxin A (OTA). The genome sequence of CW14 revealed putative enzymes involved in degrading mycotoxins, with particular focus on carboxypeptidases for OTA detoxification. This bacterium and its carboxypeptidases show promise as OTA detoxification agents in food and feed industry production.
