Ecology dictates the value of memory for foraging bees

Summary: Ecological intelligence hypotheses suggest that animal learning and memory evolve to meet the demands of foraging. This study found that short-term memory, assessed using a radial arm maze, predicts foraging efficiency in plentiful spring conditions but is reversed during the summer floral dearth. These results highlight the importance of rich and plentiful environments in driving the evolution of cognitive traits.

The findings demonstrate the high sensitivity of N. perilampoides to imidacloprid and provide insights into the bee's response to pesticide toxicity.
