Towards a more labor-saving way in microbial ammonium oxidation: A review on complete ammonia oxidization (comammox)

Guibing Zhu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen pollution is a growing challenge in the Anthropocene, and the discovery of comammox Nitrospira bacteria has changed our understanding of the nitrogen oxidation process. These bacteria can directly oxidize ammonia to nitrate and play a significant role in the global nitrogen cycle.

Biochar and organic substitution improved net ecosystem economic benefit in intensive vegetable production

Ruiyu Bi et al.

Summary: Biochar amendment and organic substitution can increase crop production, improve nitrogen use efficiency, and reduce nitrogen loss in vegetable production. However, the comprehensive environmental and economic effects of these practices need further evaluation. In this study, the effects of biochar amendment, organic substitution, and their combination on crop production were assessed using a combination of life-cycle assessment, empirical models, and field measurements. The results showed that the individual application of biochar amendment or organic substitution can improve economic returns and product quality.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exposure suppressed the community diversity and abundance of ammonia-oxidizers and mitigated N2O emissions in an alkaline soil

Rui Tao et al.

Summary: Exposure to phthalic acid esters (PAEs) significantly reduces N2O emissions in soil, decreases microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, alters the compositions of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) communities, and results in a decrease in AOA and AOB amoA gene abundances.

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria are sensitive and not resilient to organic amendment and nitrapyrin disturbances, but ammonia-oxidizing archaea are resistant

Rui Tao et al.

Summary: It was found that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria were sensitive to disturbances from organic amendments or nitrapyrin, while archaea were resistant to these disturbances. The recovery ability of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria community was significantly lower than that of archaea within 85 days.

Residual effects of four-year amendments of organic material on N2O production driven by ammonia-oxidizing archaea and bacteria in a tropical vegetable soil

Changhua Fan et al.

Summary: The study found that different types of organic materials added to tropical vegetable soils can affect the relative contributions of AOA and AOB to N2O production during ammonia oxidation. Straw can stimulate AOA-dependent N2O production, while manure incorporation triggers both AOA- and AOB-dependent N2O production.
