Phosphate-Solubilizing Microorganisms: Mechanism and Their Role in Phosphate Solubilization and Uptake

Pratibha Rawat et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is essential for plant metabolism, growth, and development, but its availability for plant uptake is limited due to complexation with metal ions in the soil. Phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms can solubilize insoluble phosphates in soil through various mechanisms, promoting plant growth and improving plant resistance while also benefiting the soil ecosystem.

Potassium phosphate/magnesium oxide modified biochars: Interfacial chemical behaviours and Pb binding performance

Qiuci Miao et al.

Summary: Chemical modification of biochar with phosphate/magnesium increased the sorption capacity of lead in aqueous solutions by enhancing the active functional groups on the biochar surface. The sorption process involved chemisorption, precipitation, complexation, and cation exchange mechanisms. Phosphate/magnesium-modified biochar showed better stability and efficiency in lead removal compared to unmodified biochar.

Effects of biochar addition on the abundance, speciation, availability, and leaching loss of soil phosphorus

Lu Yang et al.

Summary: Biochar has the potential to influence soil phosphorus transformations by providing soluble and exchangeable phosphorus, enhancing the availability of endogenic soil phosphorus, and affecting phosphorus leaching losses. Application of biochar to soils can enlarge soil phosphorus pools, increase phosphorus availability, and decrease phosphorus leaching losses. Further studies are needed to understand the long-term effects of biochar addition on soil phosphorus transformations and explore its impact on mineral-associated phosphorus and particulate phosphorus transport in biochar-amended soils.

Energy Taxis toward Redox-Active Surfaces Decreases the Transport of Electroactive Bacteria in Saturated Porous Media

Lecheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that electroactive bacteria with higher Fe(III) reduction abilities demonstrate greater retention in ferrihydrite-coated sand in porous media. Increasing the concentrations of electron donor, shuttle, and acceptor significantly reduced the mobility of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 through redox-active porous media.

Microwave co-pyrolysis of biomass, phosphorus, and magnesium for the preparation of biochar-based fertilizer: Fast synthesis, regulable structure, and graded-release

Zhongwang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, biochar-based fertilizers (BBFs) were prepared by microwave co-pyrolysis of K3PO4 with and without MgO premixed with cotton stalk. The BBFs had a multi-level nutrient structure with water-soluble P, precipitated P, and organic P, and the content could be regulated by controlling the ratio of K3PO4 and MgO. Addition of MgO not only increased the content of precipitated P and organic P in BBFs, but also improved their pore structure and zeta potential to extend the P release period.
